School News and Information

STAGE 1 CLASS NEWS
It’s hard to believe we’re already in Week 9 of Term 2—this term has flown by! The students in the K/1 Magpies and Year 2 Possums have been working incredibly hard, and it’s been wonderful to see the progress they’ve made so far this year. We’re so proud of their efforts and are excited to see what the rest of the year brings.
As Winter has well and truly returned, please make sure your child brings a warm jumper or jacket each day so they can stay cosy during outdoor play and learning. Please ensure your child’s name is on their clothing.
Here’s a little snapshot of all the fantastic things we’ve been working on this term!
English
In English, students have been learning how authors describe what characters are like on the inside and outside. They have made personal connections with the characters by relating the stories to their own experiences. Two key texts we explored were Three by Stephen Michael King and The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.
Three is a heartwarming story about a three-legged dog who finds friendship and belonging with a new family in the countryside. The Gruffalo follows a clever little mouse who uses his imagination to stay safe in the forest—until he comes face-to-face with the creature he made up!
These stories have really sparked the students’ imaginations. They have had fun creating their own characters, coming up with wonderful descriptions of what their characters are like both on the inside and the outside. It’s been a great way to help them understand how authors bring characters to life through words.

Maths
Over the past two weeks in number, the K–1 Magpies have been learning all about combining and separating numbers in different ways. They’ve explored how to show their thinking through drawings, actions, words, and number sentences. Students have been using strategies like counting on and counting back to solve simple addition and subtraction problems.
They’ve also been learning that the order of numbers doesn’t change the total (e.g. 3 + 2 is the same as 2 + 3), and that two groups with the same total are called "equal" or "equivalent." The class has been introduced to number sentences using symbols like +, –, and =, and are beginning to see how addition and subtraction are connected.
In Measurement, students have been discovering how we can divide lengths into equal parts, known as fractions. They had a great time using paper to fold, measure, and mark out different sections, helping them understand ideas like halves and quarters in a fun and hands-on way!
Geography
In our Weather and Seasons unit, students have been learning about the different seasons around the world, including Australia’s Wet and Dry seasons. We also talked about why it’s important to be able to predict the weather. As part of our learning, students created fun suitcase displays showing what they would pack if they were travelling to different places around the world—take a look at some of their fantastic work!
Athletics Carnival
Last Friday, the K/1 Magpies had a fantastic time attending their very first Athletics Carnival at Harris Park! The students enjoyed running on the track and took part in a range of fun novelty games, including relays, parachute activities, and the bean bag toss. We are so proud of their resilience, sportsmanship, and perseverance throughout the day—it was wonderful to see them give their best and cheer each other on!
As this is our last Gulgos for Term 2, we want to say a big thank you to all of our wonderful parents and carers for your continued support. We’ve had a fantastic term and are so proud of the students’ efforts. We’re looking forward to an even bigger and better Term 3 ahead!
