Year Four

Spotlight on Learning

Jericho Community

Dear Families,

This week the students have begun looking at the world of poetry by reading the 'The Eagle' written by Lord Alfred Tennyson. The students were engaged as they learned new vocabulary such as crag and azure.

In the world of mathematics, students began looking at time, the 24hr clock and calculating elapsed time to the hour.

On Tuesday, during STSS, the students attended an exciting Reptiles Encounter incursion that explored the lifecycles of different animals. The students got to pat and hold the animals that we had discussed in class. Some interesting facts that we learned included: *Cheryl, the spiny leaf stick insect, throws her eggs out of the tree. Bull ants then adopt them as they look very similar to baby bull ants when they hatch.

*Popcorn, the Shingle back lizard, has a head and tail that look the same. When a predator tries to attack her tail, she ‘poops’ on them in retaliation.

*Steve, the Saltwater crocodile, is reared by very protective parents. However, if the children don’t listen to their mum she will eat them.

The students were very engaged and some were even brave enough to pat the animals or have them rest on their head!

Important Reminders

Every morning the students complete a 'Check in'. This is generally done between 8:45 and 8:55am.

Thanks for providing your child with fruit or vegetables for their fruit break. We all get a little peckish mid morning, so it helps with our learning.

Please ensure that your child has a bottle of water each day. They are able to refill it when needed.

As the weather is getting colder, bringing a jacket to school to help us keep warm when we are outside is recommended. Please put names on all clothing items so they can be returned if they become lost.

Please continue to listen to your child read as this helps to build their fluency and accuracy skills.
