Year One

Spotlight on Learning

Jerusalem Community

Dear Families,

We are almost at the end of term 2! and we can tell the students are quite tired already. This week we finalise reports and they will be available to parents on Friday the 27th of June. Please access them before parent teacher interviews next Thursday, in case you have any questions for the teachers. We hope to see most parents book in for this night.

Religious Education Focus:  This week we continued to learn about St. Thomas' journey of faith. We will celebrate St. Thomas' feast day on the 3rd-4th of July and are hoping to prepare the students for this experience.  We learnt that all of us are on our own journey of learning, faith and growing and some journeys are uncomfortable-including learning.

English focus:. This week we learnt about 'air', 'ere' and 'air' sound as in there, hair and scarecrow.

Mathematics focus: This week we learnt about time as a measurement tool. At level 1, students understand the duration of events.

SEL: This week for SEL we have watched Moana in short bursts of 10 minutes and described what Moana and Maui's characters are like. We have also discussed about Personal Strengths, the characters possess.

History:  During Inquiry we have begun creating our visual reflection about what we have learnt about the past and present. Students are on their way to creating visual masterpieces that represent their knowledge.

AUSLAN: This week have completed our end of term assessment.

Next week we are learning about...

Religious Education focus: We will continue to work on the St. Thomas journey flip book.

English focus: Next week we will continue to read the book  Tom Tom.

Mathematics focus: Students will learn about Measurement- Time and duration of events.

SEL: We will finish watching Moana and learn about personal strengths of the characters and make connections to ourselves.

Ways to engage with the newsletter:

  • Read or watch the weekly book with your child at home (there is often a read aloud on you tube). Talk about what the book's most important ideas are.

  • Ask your child to 'retell' the story using their own words.

  • Talk about who the characters are, where the story is happening.

  • Use the spelling words provided to make up sentences at home or simply have a 5 word mini dictation.

  • Take the idea around Mathematics and ask students to repeat an activity they did at school, with you.

  • If your child has more than 1 take home reader at home, please return the extra books to us. We need to make sure that every child has access to books at their reading level.

    Reminders

  • Please ensure students have a jumper or sports jackets for outside play.

  • If your child is unwell and finds it difficult to concentrate at school, perhaps a rest day is needed.

  • Comprehension questions to ask based on the take home reader:
    "Point to where it shows...."
    “I wonder why…”
    "what makes you think...."
    “This reminds me of…”
    "Show me where it says"
“I didn’t understand that part, so I’ll reread it.”
Use a mix of Who, What, When, Where, Why, How questions based on the book.
