Dear Families,
Our students competed in the District Sports Competition on Monday this week. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to compete, demonstrate sportsmanship, and represent St Thomas the Apostle with pride in the broader Cranbourne community. We are proud of the effort and enthusiasm shown by all participants.
Our students have continued to apply themselves diligently as they complete their final assessments in preparation for reports and the upcoming Student, Parent and Teacher Interviews in Week 11. They should be proud of the resilience and determination they’ve shown during this busy period.
Religious Education Focus:
In Religious Education, students continued researching a saint of their choice, identifying qualities they admire and exploring how that saint followed the example and teachings of Jesus. They also completed their assessment on the topics covered throughout the term.
English Focus:
Reading:
This week, our students continued to learn about words with the Latin base 'aqua', meaning water, and 'tain', meaning hold. They practised their reading fluency and summarising skills to enhance comprehension and confident reading.
Writing:
This week, students continued reading our new text, Country Town. They examined the structure of this genre—including orientation, complication, and resolution—as well as the language devices authors use to build setting, develop characters, and create a sense of time and place. The rich descriptions and historical context in Country Town have helped students deepen their understanding of how narrative techniques can bring the past to life.
Mathematics Focus:
This week, students developed their understanding of fractions by learning how to compare, add, and subtract them. They explored strategies for finding common denominators, simplifying fractions, and using visual models to support their thinking. Through games and problem-solving tasks, students have strengthened their ability to apply these skills in real-world contexts, building confidence and fluency in working with fractions.
Integrated Studies Focus:
This week, our students have continued their historical inquiry into one of Australia's original colonies. Working in small groups, they are researching key events, significant figures, and historical themes, using both primary and secondary sources. Through timelines and creative presentations, students are deepening their understanding of Australia’s colonial past while strengthening their collaboration and communication skills.
Social & Emotional Learning Focus
Students continued learning about healthy coping strategies suited to different situations and worked on developing their own positive coping profiles.
Auslan Learning Focus
This week, students applied their knowledge of English to plan sentences with the time sign placed at the beginning. They revised key signs to express time and weather, such as "Today is hot," "Tomorrow will be hot," and "Yesterday was cold."
Kind regards,
The Year 6 Team
