Year 7 students have been walking a mile in someone else’s shoes—sometimes quite literally—as part of their latest Health unit on inclusivity and diversity. The unit, which aims to build empathy and awareness, has challenged students to think critically about how environments can either welcome or exclude people based on accessibility. A key part of the unit included an excursion to the Devonport CBD, where students assessed public spaces through the eyes of individuals who use wheelchairs or live with vision impairment.
Students noticed things like uneven footpaths, high kerbs without ramps, and shops that were too narrow for wheelchair access. Other students were surprised by how few tactile ground surface indicators were present for people with low vision.
Back at school, students continued their investigations by auditing areas around campus, including classrooms, playgrounds, and hallways. Their observations led to thoughtful discussions about how simple changes—such as clearer signage, better lighting, or quieter zones—could make a big difference in how safe and included someone might feel.
As part of the unit, classes have also been participating in wheelchair basketball sessions—an experience that has provided both fun and insight. Students quickly discovered the physical challenges of navigating a wheelchair while trying to coordinate a team sport, gaining a deeper appreciation for athletes with disabilities and the importance of inclusive recreation.
The culminating task for the unit asks students to redesign a space—either real or imagined—and make it more accessible or inclusive. They must submit a design and write a rationale that explains their choices, showing their understanding of both physical and social inclusion.
The unit reflects the school’s broader commitment to compassion, community, and justice, empowering students to notice those who are often overlooked and take action to include them.
