This term the Grade 1 and 2 students have been working with paper to make their artworks. They have folded it, twisted it, cut and paste it, made bow ties with it, woven it, in fact the only thing they haven’t done with paper is draw or paint on it!+
The first paper construction project was their clown faces. The students made clown hats, focusing on symmetry and shape, they made paper springs for hair and accordion folds for the bow ties. Of course, adding face paint with posca pens was the final touch in turning them into clowns.
Their next project was a wonderful radial symmetry sculpture. The sculpture looks stunning hanging on a hook, and it looked complicated to create but once the students understood how to make their paper strips symmetrical the ideas really took off.
The final project to complete their paper construction unit was a paper weaving artwork. The students learnt about Kente cloth which is a handwoven, brightly coloured textile that originated in Ghana, West Africa. It's known for its intricate geometric patterns and is traditionally worn by the Akan and Ashanti people. The cloth is made by weaving together strips of silk and cotton on a hand loom. The students wove paper strips on their hand cut loom and added geometric patterns to each square.
