Grade 5/6 News

Year 5/6 Newsletter Week 10
It has been a busy couple of weeks in the grade 5/6 classrooms, leading up to our camp this week!
In Literacy, we have been reading a memoir called ‘I am Malala’. It is an inspiring true story, written in the perspective of a young girl named Malala about her life experiences. She details her experiences growing up in a war-torn region of Pakistan, where her and her father stood up for women’s rights, including the right for young girls to have an education. In the face of extreme adversity, Malala continued to be a voice for people around the world and even had the opportunity to deliver an inspiring speech at a United Nations meeting in front of many world leaders. Throughout this memoir, students engaged in meaningful discussions about Malala’s perspective on life. Students have also recently worked on writing their own innovated version of a modelled text called ‘The Nightmare Man’. This story is a suspense tale, where students write a story where a character has a fear about something, which they eventually overcome.
In Numeracy, the year 5 students have been learning about multiplication and division of larger numbers. They have also been introduced to solving order of operation problems. Year 6 students have been learning about fractions for the second half of this term. This has involved being able to add, subtract, multiply and divide related and unrelated denominators.
Camp
On Wednesday, just over 40 students braved the cold and set off for their city camp adventure! We set off from Tarneit train station to the city. We spent the day exploring the city, visiting the National Gallery of Victoria, roaming around Federation Square and paying a visit to the Shrine of Remembrance. The students relaxed in the warm comfort of the camp at night time and enjoyed their first dinner together.
On Thursday, we used public transport to arrive at the Melbourne Museum and enjoyed a nice lunch at the Carlton Gardens. From their, we travelled back to the O Brien Icehouse, where many students experienced the thrill of ice skating for the first time. After a big two days of exploring the city, students relaxed by watching a movie before heading off for a sleep to get ready for their last day.
On Friday after packing up their rooms and belongings, we set off the explore the Queen Victoria Market, checking out all of the food stalls and markets on offer. After lunch, we set off back to Tarneit Train Station to conclude our camp experience! We hope your child had a wonderful time at camp.
