Grade 1 News

Hello Grade One Families!

What a wonderful term of learning we have had so far! The weeks have been flying by, and we can’t believe we are almost at the end of term. The children have been learning lots of wonderful things this term, which we would love to share with you!

English

In English over the past few weeks, the children have been introduced to the following new sounds /ea/ /ai/ /ie/ /aw/ /ur/ and /ear/. They have been doing a great job of reading and writing these words every day.

Talk For Writing

The children have been doing so well in our Talk For Writing lessons. Currently the children have been working on writing their innovations of The Gruffalo. They have been incorporating their own characters and working on using adjectives to describe them. We have been so blown away by the amazing standard of writing that the children have been producing!

Core Knowledge

In Core Knowledge the students have begun a unit of learning called Different Lands, Similar Stories. In this unit the students are beginning to explore folktales from around the world, looking at different stories which have similar storylines, such as Tom Thumb and Issun Boshi. So far they have enjoyed listening to the story of Tom Thumb.

Maths

In Maths, the students have been learning all about different types of measurement including length, mass, capacity and volume. The Children have been using informal units such as unifix cubes to measure length and have used language such as greater than and less than to compare different masses and volumes of items.

Scienceworks Excursion

On Monday 16th of June the Grade 1 students travelled by bus to the Scienceworks Museum. They explored all things space, viewing Tycho Goes to Mars, and looking at the actual night sky over the west of Melbourne, in the planetarium. The students also got to learn how rockets work, with some of the students helping with simple experiments demonstrating how a rocket takes off.

The students also spent some time exploring other exhibitions in Scienceworks, including ‘Think Ahead’ and ‘Sportsworks’. It was a wonderful day!
