Another fortnight has flown past again with our 5/6's needing a big congratulations for their efforts during the NAPLAN period. Our 5's were very considerate and calm during the tests, and our 6's worked on a 'passion project' of their choosing.
On the last day of school, Friday 4th April, 5/6 students will be trialling for the winter interschool sport teams. The sports include: Netball, AFL 9s, Softball, Hockey, Soccer. The alternate sports program will also run in Term 2 with students engaging in a variety of sports. If your child is going to be absent on the last day of term, they will need to speak with their teacher ASAP to provide a list of preferred options in order, so that we can allocate them as best we can.
What's happening in the Classroom in the following fortnight:
Inquiry: As mentioned in the previous newsletter and the letter attached to W8 homework, students are working towards their major inquiry project for Term 1: Natural Disaster Presentation. There will be a key component in the project that asks students to create a 'preparation' or 'safety' resource to accompany their information report. Students will need to explain why this device/resource is important when faced with this type of disaster. This resource is to be completed for homework and will replace the maths component of homework for Weeks 8 and 9. This is due on Monday 31st March.
Writing: Students will refine their skills in gathering information, preparing an information report as part of their major inquiry project for the term. They will practise presenting this orally to an audience. They will use the 6+1 Traits of Writing Rubric to guide their writing and prepare to assess a peer's presentation. This component of the assignment will all be completed AT SCHOOL.
Reading: We have begun to compare and contrast texts by the same author, Jackie French. These texts are linked with our inquiry, describing the forces of nature that occur in Australia. We will be also be completing our class novel, 'Now' and evaluate the text in a variety of ways: a character profile, a summary and a book review.
Maths: We are working to complete our unit on 4 Operations, with the final lessons looking at division and problem solving. The final unit for the term is focused on Data and Statistics, including analysing data sets, reading tables and graphs and comparing numerical information.
Willy Kids: Respectful Relationships: Week 9 and 10 looks at valuing the rights of others. We look to incorporate our work on consideration and kindness into these lessons. In RR, students continue their work on using positive self-talk when managing challenging situations, both in and out of the classroom.
