Senior School Reflection

Our Year 11 & 12 students have continued their positive start to the term. Our VCE students have completed their first round of SACs/SATs in their subjects, while our VCE-VM & VPC students are progressively completing their ELTs. At this time, it is important for all students to be fully aware of what work and assessments need to be completed to achieve the best possible results in their studies. Asking questions of teachers, using a system of planning study & revising and maintaining an attentive attitude in class are all basic strategies to ensure academic progress.

For students who are ‘at risk’ in any subject senior sub-school have communicated this via ‘at risk’ letters, Compass feedback and phone calls home. There are a range of supports strategies in place in senior school and the responsibilities of students who are ‘at-risk,’ are to access these supports as required.

Moving through the Senior Learning Centre (SLC) and talking to both staff and students there is growing confidence that most students are on track to achieve academic success in 2025. This has never been so important for our Year 12 students as their time in school is slowly winding down towards the transition to life as an adult in further study, training, or employment. I am thankful that we have an enthusiastic and talented team of teachers in senior school that continue to support students on a personal and academic level.

Progress Reports and Parent-Teacher Conferences

Semester 1 Progress Reports for all students will be made available in Compass on Wednesday 2nd April. As detailed in our previous newsletter, Progress Reports provide a snapshot of your child’s performance in 5 Learning Behaviours, which are a focus at the class level for all teachers and students at Westall SC. Instructions are attached below on how you can access Progress Reports.  See attachment and information on how to view your child's report.

This feedback provided with progress reports also provides a structure for conversations that take place in Parent Teacher Conferences, which will now be conducted in the third week of Term 2, Tuesday 6th May. This is a date change from what has previously been communicated. The conferences will be at school and will be face-to-face with teachers. Parent/Carers can access the online booking system using your Compass Username and Password. Teachers can also book students directly into time slots if students know the time that best suits their Parent/Carer. Instructions on how to make a booking in Compass are also included within the attachment below and information on how to book parent-teacher interviews. If you require any assistance in making the bookings, please contact the school. For assistance with bookings or login issues, please contact the office on 9546 3233.

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)

Last week marked the first week of our Professional Learning Community (PLC) cycle. In 2025, the work within PLCs is linked to whole-school goals and key improvement strategies linked to improved practice. Like last year the work within this cycle is specifically targeting the effective implementation of our Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) instructional model. Achieving improved practice will contribute to our students achieving improved educational outcomes, and success in the classroom. Currently our PLC teams are analysing whole school and classroom data as a starting point to create goals within each of our PLCs. This year coaching will become more focused, via classroom observations.
