Principal's Report

Dear Members of the Burwood East Primary School Community,
I have spoken with our male cohort to remind them about using the toilets for their intended purpose, and then leaving and returning to their classrooms promptly.
Did you know that the cleaners at school are spending a lot of time cleaning up toilet mess that is not in the toilet?
Some students at BEPS:
- Have been placing toilet rolls in the toilets, intentionally blocking toilets and throwing toilet paper at the ceiling and walls.
- Choose not to use the toilet or urinal for their intended purpose - instead purposely wetting the floors, walls and toilet rolls.
- Are writing on the walls…graffitiing!
Please support us by speaking to your child/ren about their responsibility (making the right choice) when visiting the toilet and having communal responsibility (encouraging others to make the right choice). A reminder to everyone, if you SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. At BEPS we have students who care and live by our school values!
We understand and acknowledge that overall the majority of our students are respectful of school property and do the right thing.
The last fortnight around our school has been one of continued excitement as there is always lots of learning happening across the school. A particular highlight for our school is accessing the Story Dogs Program which sees LuLu, the King Charles Cavalier, come to our school on Tuesday mornings to listen to some of our Year 2 students read.
When children read to LuLu it is a non-judgemental setting, the student's focus improves, their literacy skills increase and their confidence soars. The accepting, loving nature of LuLu gives this program its magic and helps children to relax, open up, try harder and have fun with reading.
As a school we currently utilise the SoundWaves Program to support a consistent approach to the statewide expectation that systematic synthetic phonics is taught daily as an element of literacy teaching. It is wonderful to see the learning occurring across the school through this program as students decode, write and share word knowledge whilst staff engage in further professional learning and rigorous conversation on how best to implement and structure this daily.
Enrolments at BEPS
Over the past three years we have been restricted by the Department of Education to enrolling students from within our designated zone. This restriction has now been lifted, as we have reduced our numbers in accordance with our facilities, and we will now accept enrolments from neighbouring suburbs. Therefore, we are now taking enrolments for our 2026 Foundation classes. Please inform family, friends and neighbours that if they have a child starting school next year, they are welcome at BEPS. All families can book a school tour on our website to view our school in action.
Kiss and Go Parking
The Kiss and Go parking zone is for short term use only. Parents and carers should not leave their vehicle unattended at any time or they may incur a fine. Leaving a vehicle unattended also leads to the Kiss and Go parking zone becoming congested, reducing its effectiveness and negatively impacting other families who are trying to drop their children off at school. Please, do not leave your car unattended and please keep to the time limit.
Student Voice Action Team (SVAT)
It was wonderful to celebrate this year’s 2025 SVAT at this week’s Assembly. The students are excited to begin their work with Kat, and to share their ideas and enthusiasm with the school community. The new SVAT have already shown great dedication and passion for making our school a better place, and we are confident that their leadership will inspire positive changes this year.
As they embark on their initiatives, we encourage all students to support and engage with our SVAT. Whether it's suggesting ideas, participating in school events, or simply showing appreciation for their hard work, every bit of involvement counts. We look forward to seeing the creative projects and solutions they will bring to life, and wish them all the best in their roles as leaders, advocates, and changemakers in our school community.
School Council Annual General Meeting
The Annual Report to the school community will be presented on Monday, 17th March at 9.30am in the library at our Annual General Meeting (after assembly). All community members are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting.
The annual report provides a means for the school council to inform the community of what has been achieved and how the school is performing. Providing information about schools helps the community hold schools, the system and government accountable for improving student outcomes.
Labour Day Public Holiday and Pupil Free Day
Please be reminded that next weekend is a public holiday. There will be no school on Monday 10th March.
Celebrating Student Success: Monash District Swimming Carnival
On Wednesday, eight students proudly represented BEPS at the Division Swimming Carnival.
Each student gave their best effort, demonstrating great sportsmanship and determination. They not only represented our school with pride but also showcased their personal excellence.
A special congratulations to Advay, who secured both first and second place in his races, and to Steve, who impressively competed against older students and claimed first place in his event. Congratulations to Jemma for coming third in the 50m butterfly.
We wish them all the best for the next competition on Friday, March 21st!
Yours in Partnership,
Darren
