Year 4 - Healesville
Excursion
Last Tuesday, the Year 4 students enjoyed an exciting excursion to Healesville Sanctuary.
learned about animal enrichment programs, discovering how the sanctuary creates happy environments for its residents, including optional performance tricks for birds in the Spirit of the Sky show.
The students appreciated the animals' access to hiding spots for privacy and the safety measures, such as double-door systems. Highlights included bird spotting in a large aviary, where they identified various species like the gang-gang bird, and witnessing Bernice the Bird gracefully fly over their heads.
Lisa, the zoo keeper, educated them on predators and prey, the significance of the manna gum tree, and the edible witchetty grubs found there.
Students also embarked on a bird and plant scavenger hunt, but encountered playful bin chickens in the wild that cheekily tried to snatch their lunches!
Observing various animals, including reptiles and wombats, they learned the stark differences between zoos and sanctuaries.
