Japanese

こんにちは

We have enjoyed a wonderful start to the Japanese program, with many different topics being studied and cultural events taking place. The Year 7s began the year by learning the basic Japanese alphabet, Hiragana, with the aid of picture clues, and they have recently tried using chopsticks to pick up things as challenging as a single grain of rice! Our combined class of Year 8 and 9 students started by ensuring they remember how to write the Japanese alphabet and structure sentences around the topics of animals and colours. They have also designed beautiful ‘ema’ boards, expressing their hopes for the year of the snake. The VCE group has been focusing on discussing topics such as family and holidays, while having fun exploring Kanji and all the beautiful connections and stories behind them.

During lunchtime on Wednesdays, many students have been taking the opportunity to participate in Japanese Club, where they can play traditional Japanese board games, practice their origami skills, and take part in bean-throwing for the Setsubun Festival.

This September, we will be taking a group of students on a 10-day adventure to Japan, where they will experience a homestay with a family, attend our sister school, explore Tokyo and Disneyland, and ride a bullet train!

Lastly, we are so lucky and thankful to have Yasuko volunteering with our Japanese program at HHS, giving the students the opportunity to speak with and learn from someone who is actually from Japan!
