Year 10 Crime and Justice

By Tori Winter-Berry (Year 10)
On Tuesday the 4th of March, we went to the Parliament of Victoria where our tour guide, James, taught us about how a law is made and the different political parties. We visited the green house (Legislative Assembly) and the red house (Legislative Council). It was a sitting day, so we also had a visit from our local member, Cindy McLeish, who spoke to us about her role as our elected representative for Eildon.
After parliament, we went to the Old Melbourne Gaol where we experienced going through the Watch House as someone who was detained. We got mugshots and experienced what life would have been life in the cells, at night, and in the exercise yards.
Following that, a very energetic tour guide, Troy, gave us a tour of the actual gaol. He told us all about how people were punished back in the day. We saw the gallows where Ned Kelly was hanged, the guns he used in battle, his armour and one of the ten original death masks made following his death. Overall the day was so much fun and was very interesting.
