Wrapping Up Term 1: Exploring 'Free' Art Experiences
As we wrap up Term 1, our drawing and painting lessons focussed on embracing creativity with ‘free’ art experiences. This week, we had the chance to experiment with 'Bilateral Drawing,' a unique technique that challenges artists to engage both sides of their body and brain. The task was to draw with both hands simultaneously, creating a truly dynamic and sometimes unexpected result.
We also explored ‘Mirror Drawing,’ where we partnered up and mirrored the marks each other made. This exercise encouraged collaboration and trust as we worked together to create something beautiful. Both experiences were not only fun but also helped us tap into that sense of freedom and flow that often comes when we’re fully immersed in creativity.
Exploring Ali Baba’s Treasures: A Creative Journey into Watercolor Art
This term, Grade 3/4 students embarked on a magical adventure exploring the treasures of Ali Baba, not in a cave, but on paper! Inspiration was taken from the legendary story and brought to life through a vibrant watercolor painting project. The main focus was to create stunning geode designs, capturing the beauty of sparkling gems and intricate layers.
To give the artwork that extra touch of brilliance, students experimented with a special technique used by professional artists: adding salt to the painted surface. Once the watercolor was applied, salt was sprinkled onto the wet paint, watching as the salt absorbed the pigments and created fascinating textures and patterns. The result was a collection of geode-inspired masterpieces, that shimmer with unique beauty.
Students worked on special watercolor paper, designed to handle the flow and blending of paints, and the salt added a magical effect, making the colors pop and giving each piece a one-of-a-kind look. It was amazing to see how this technique transformed the paintings, making them feel like hidden treasures from Ali Baba's cave!
This creative experience allowed students to learn more about color blending, texture, and the joy of experimenting with different art techniques. It’s safe to say that all students left this term with a newfound appreciation for the magic of art.
