From Our School Leaders

Welcome Back To Term 2
We have had another smooth start to the term at Scoresby PS. It may have helped that Week 1 was a very short week! The student leaders did a terrific job of the Anzac ceremony last Thursday, and we were very impressed with how respectful the whole school audience was for this commemorative assembly.
Our new specialist subject - Cultural Studies - kicked off this week. This term, all students will be learning attributes and information about our world (continents, countries, oceans and different climates), and then the focus will narrow to our country, Australia. Sue is teaching F-4 Cultural Studies, and Nic is taking the 5/6 classes. Most classes will be on Mondays, and the 3/4s will have their lessons on Fridays.
Education Week - 12th-18th May
Each year, the Department of Education sets aside a week in the calendar to celebrate schools and all that they do. Education Week has been running for many years and is an opportunity for schools to invite their communities into classrooms, share their learning, and celebrate their students’ achievements.
We have a few things planned for Education Week 2025 and we hope you and your extended family can join us.

Mental Health In Primary Schools Program
Last term Nic Rheumer, Kellie Symons and Sue Hartley attended the DET 2-day training for Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) initiative. Below is a brief overview of the program that DET are rolling out in all primary schools over the next three years.
Nicole Rheumer is our MHiPS leader at SPS, and she will be coordinating the initiative as it rolls out this year. The Mental Health in Schools Program is about building our teachers’ capacity to understand the mental health challenges of their students, and what role they can play in supporting these children, while also promoting positive mental health and wellbeing for all students.
Building primary schools’ capacity to enhance children’s mental health
Children’s mental health is fundamental to their development and learning. Good mental health means having a positive sense of wellbeing, coping with challenges and being able to realise individual potential. Unfortunately, not all children experience good mental health. Schools are an ideal platform for promoting children’s mental health. Yet, without resourcing and dedicated training and support, it can be challenging for teachers to navigate increasing mental health issues in the classroom.
Developed by paediatricians, educators, psychologists, researchers and teachers, the Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) initiative upskills experienced teachers to become Mental Health and Wellbeing Leaders, and aims to increase the capacity of Victorian primary schools to support the mental health of their students.
Change To Our Newsletter
This term, we will be changing things up a bit with our newsletters. There is a lot of information to share across this new field of mental health. The fortnightly rotation of Whole School and Level Newsletters will remain, and we will be adding in a Wellbeing Newsletter in place of a Whole School Newsletter monthly.
Fun With Families Afternoon – A BIG SUCCESS
Thank you to our community for coming to school and supporting this fundraising event last Sunday. Our students - Tommy, Emily and Dante - showed initiative after they had attended the 2025 Student Leadership Conference, and requested that they be able to run a fundraiser and came up with the idea of a family board game afternoon.
We had a few planning sessions, they made posters, and planned out the events for the day. It was decided that the funds raised from the event would go to the Scoresby Wildlife Rescue Service. The students asked their parents and school friends for assistance on the day, and the helpers gave a hand in setting up and got to school at 1.30pm, ready to go for a 2.00pm start.
Quite a few SPS students and their families popped into the event and played games in the hall for the afternoon. Games on offer were chess, Connect 4, Twister, dominoes, skipping, chalk drawing, and various other board games. Some families also brought cans to be donated to the 10c drink container collection, with funds raised going towards the Scoresby Wildlife Rescue Service as well - thanks Erin!
At the end of the day, the event raised over $100, which was a very positive outcome for these students in their first go at organising an event. Congratulations Tommy, Emily and Dante for your work. You should be very proud of your achievement!
