Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

A few weeks ago, I mentioned the Leadership Team were engaged in a two-year CSBB Faith Formation Leadership Formation program designed to deepen our commitment to leading with faith and purpose. This term, we participated in the Catholic Leadership in Contemporary Culture module, led by The Very Rev. Dr. David Ranson who continues to guide us in exploring the role of faith-based leadership in today’s ever-evolving educational and societal landscape. We took a deeper look into Catholic culture schools are trying to navigate in a modern world. At the end of the 4 podcasts and sessions we were asked to reflect on our understanding of our leadership role in this contemporary context giving specific examples. I would like to share my response to the questions.

In my school context at Holy Family, we navigate the tension between our distinct Catholic identity and the diversity of experiences in a pluralist society through intentional pastoral care, inclusive pedagogy, and faith-filled community initiatives.

Some examples include:

Curriculum and Teaching Approach – We integrate Catholic values into all subject areas while fostering critical thinking and respectful dialogue. For example, in Religious Education, students explore Gospel values alongside ethical issues in contemporary society, encouraging them to engage with differing perspectives through a lens of faith and compassion.

Wellbeing Programs with a Faith Perspective – Initiatives such as the Friendology program teach students about positive relationships and resilience, aligning with Catholic social teachings on the dignity of each person. Similarly, our SPARK (Enrichment) program promotes student engagement in learning while recognizing each child’s unique gifts and talents.

Celebrations and Liturgical Life – We honour the Catholic tradition through school Masses, prayer, and sacramental preparation while ensuring that all students, regardless of faith background, feel welcomed and included. Our strong partnership with the parish ensures Sacramental preparation sessions provide a supportive environment for students, while broader school liturgies emphasise themes of love, service, and community that resonate with all.

Service and Stewardship – The Green Team’s stewardship initiatives, including the Return and Earn project, reflect both Catholic social teaching on care for creation and a broader community responsibility that is accessible to all. Likewise, our engagement with Cana Communities encourages staff and students to put faith into action through service to those in need.

Leadership Formation and Professional Learning – Our staff development days, such as those focused on curriculum reform and assessment, ensure that our teaching aligns with both Catholic educational principles and contemporary best practice. The CSBB Living Our Values formation program further supports educators in integrating faith into their leadership and pedagogy.

Inclusive Community Engagement – Events like the Lindfield Art Show and Fair bring together families of all backgrounds, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Similarly, our Homework Club and Running Club provide opportunities for students to grow in both academic and personal development, supported by a caring community.

By keeping our focus on people and their lived experiences, we uphold the Catholic mission of education while embracing the diversity within our school, ensuring that faith and learning go hand in hand in a way that is both faithful and innovative.
