Saints sport is done for the year, and I express my gratitude to all who contributed to sport at Saints throughout 2024. The sport program would not be the success that it is without the work of the Saints staff that give up countless hours of time to coaching, managing and sports administration to give our students the best opportunity to participate in school sport. Thanks to the Saints parents and families for your support of our program. Your encouragement and support of our students’ participation (not to mention frequent completion of EdSmart parent slips) ensure that the boys have access to sporting opportunities throughout the region. Finally, thanks to the students for your desire to represent Saints in a wide range of sports and the weekly Wednesday sport program.
I also express my thanks to the local businesses that have sponsored or supported sport at St Augustine’s in 2024. Unfortunately, sport in Cairns is often a very costly endeavour when travel and accommodation costs are factored in. Thanks to the businesses below for your contributions which keep sport as affordable as possible for our students.
JSS
Congratulations to our JSS teams who competed in the JSS Grand Finals. All 5 St Augustine’s teams made the Premier Division semi-finals, with 4 progressing through to the Grand Final. Saints were victorious in the AFL Grand Final, defeating Newman College 93 – 8. Unfortunately our basketball, football, and touch football teams lost their grand finals, finishing as runners up. Our Volleyball team were semi-finalists losing to eventual premiers Cairns High.
St Augustine’s were crowned as the Overall Champion Boys School and ‘Saints Combined’ with St Monica’s were crowned the Overall Champion School.
Thanks to our coaches Mr Hume, Mr Lee, Mr Chapman, Mr McDonough, Mr Brimstone and Miss Rettke for your work coaching the teams this season. Congratulations to the following students who were awarded JSS end-of-season awards for their efforts throughout the season.
