Year Four
Dear Year Four Families,
Literacy:
The Year 4 students are well on their way into Term 4! Many students are thriving in their Book Clubs, reaching targets, recording their thinking and engaging in discussions about the characters and events in their texts. Above and beyond, students have continued exploring various text forms to gather information and tried their hand at writing historical narratives. These narratives have assisted students in their understanding and importance of considering perspectives, while simultaneously learning about the events and author craft.
Mathematics:
In Mathematics, we’ve been focusing on short division and exploring fact families to deepen our understanding of relationships between numbers. Year 4 are developing efficient mental and written strategies to solve division problems, helping them become more confident in their divisional skills.
We’ve also introduced the use of calculators, allowing students to check their work and explore larger numbers. For those ready for an extra challenge, we’ve discussed remainders and how to interpret them in different contexts.
Student's were introduced to the use of appropriate digital technologies and how it can assist in solving division problems. They check their work and explored larger numbers, which helped build their confidence and understanding in their calculations.
Encouraging practice at home will help reinforce these concepts and grow our mathematical skills.
Inquiry:
As the Year 4's begin investigating their explorer of choice, they are focusing on ensuring any information gathered is provided through a reliable source. They have looked at various websites and have used a checklist to evaluate the credibility of the sites. After practising paraphrasing skills, the students have started taking notes on their person of interest, in preparation for their independent investigations and presentations. This has led to us to being able to circle back once more to asking strong open-ended questions., ensuring we are digging deeper as opposed to surface level inquiry.
