Year Two
Dear Year Two Community,
time is flying in Term 4 with so many different events that have happened!
IMAX and Melbourne Museum excursion:
What a fantastic excursion! Students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the IMAX movie 'Extreme Weather'. It was a great provocation to begin our new inquiry about 'Natural Disasters'.
Maths:
The Year Two students have been exploring the unit on Fractions, focusing on reading and understanding fractions, recognising how to share equally, and expressing these concepts in written form. They are now set to begin a new unit on Money!
Writing:
The students have been so engaged within the unit of Poetry. So far we have explored, Haiku, limericks and free verse poems. Students being encouraged to use as many poetic features as they can when completing these poems such as for a limerick they need to follow the rule of AABBA, line 1, 2 and 5 rhyme and 3, 4 rhyme together. Some other poetic features they have practiced is rhyme, rhythm, onomatopoeia, alliteration and personification.
The students will now transition into a new unit focused on writing Narratives! Check out our 'Inspiration wall' to support the students in getting ideas from one another when writing their own Narratives.
Reading:
This week Year Two students have been focusing on the features in non-fiction texts. Good discussions were had around the differences between a diagram/labels and photographs and captions.
Inquiry:
Students thoroughly enjoyed Unit of Inquiry 5, centered on the central idea that 'Properties of materials determine their uses.' Last week, they creatively constructed houses using their selected recycled materials, aiming to withstand the "Big Bad Wolf" hair dryer, and many of these structures proved resilient. As we transition into Unit of Inquiry 6, we continue to be impressed by their curiosity and engagement in our IB program.
