Industrial Tech Timber Excursion

Term 4 Week 1, 2024

In Week 1, the Year 11 Industrial Technology Timber class travelled to Bungendore and the ACT region. The purpose of the visit was to inspire Year 11 students as they embark on the design and production of their Year 12 HSC Major Projects. Students got to investigate and interact with various materials, joinery techniques, hardware and finishes to influence their own works.

Andrew and Sharon who manage the daily operations of the Wood Works Gallery were very generous to our students with information, expertise, and resources! Students were amazed at the works for sale which were quite expensive given their handcrafted and artistic nature, with a hand-carved dining table in the vicinity of $80,000!

Students also visited IKEA to explore alternatives to handcrafted works, identifying mass-produced items as well as various design styles and themes.

They finished the trip with a walk through the Majura Bunnings to identify keys to selecting timber and materials, and what to look out for when purchasing materials to avoid defects and reduce costs.
