Welcome

What is a Biblical Worldview?

Here at Wagga Wagga Christian College, we try to in all things work out of a Biblical worldview. A definition of a worldview is the internal story that we all carry which shapes how we live and approach the world. There are many books and courses at university that cover the concept of worldview so please forgive my rather simple definition! A Biblical worldview therefore looks at the world through the grand narrative of the Bible and where we are in the Biblical story and what the Bible says about us.

When we teach our subjects at Wagga Wagga Christian College, we make sure that we are teaching students out of that Biblical worldview. So, I thought I would look over the next three newsletter articles at some of the main subjects that we teach and what the Biblical worldview is for each subject area. This week I shall start with English and Maths.

English

Words have incredible power; they can build up or destroy people. In the book of Genesis, we see that God created the world and everything in it simply through the power of His word. God created the facility of spoken and written language in human beings as the primary means by which He chooses to communicate with people, as individuals, created in His image.

For every individual human being therefore the facility of language is a gift to be treasured, faithfully nurtured and wisely applied. In its written and spoken form, it is the means whereby we come to know what God is like and what He has done in the life, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. The facility of language, in its written and spoken form, is how God graciously draws us to Himself and by which we can rightly thank Him and speak of Him to others.

In addition to revealing Himself, the facility of language is the primary means that God has given, to enable effective, personal communication between human beings and thus foster the creation of mutually beneficial social, cultural and administrative structures in human society.

At Wagga Wagga Christian College, we encourage students to understand that language is central to learning and is the major vehicle for elaborating and expressing thought and to understand that our words have the potential to go into the world with the power to create, destroy or restore.

Mathematics

‘Mathematics is the alphabet with which God wrote the universe’ (Galileo)

Mathematics is one of those subject areas that people often struggle to see how it can be taught from a Biblical perspective. It is often thought of as just a tool that we use, 1+1 = 2 whether you are a Christian or you aren’t. However, there is far more to it than that. There is a rigorous body of knowledge developed around the area of worldview and Mathematics.

Mathematics is far more than just a tool that we use. It is an amazing affirmation of God and His creational goodness. God created the world in a way that is ordered and structured and allowed us to be able to find out aspects of this world through the use of mathematics. We are born with the ability to understand the concepts of numbers and the mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction and multiplication. Think of how much of our world is known to us through these concepts. Distance travelled, height of people, measurement of ingredients for a recipe. There is much creational goodness that is enjoyed and explained through mathematics. There is incredible design in our world that can be described in mathematical terms that shows the glory of the Creator. Calling mathematics just a tool that we use is not giving full credit to our God and His amazing creation.

Mathematics allows us to teach our students about the wonder and awe of creation and our Creator. Think of the Fibonacci pattern and all of its applications in nature. Mathematics helps our students to learn about and tackle social justice by understanding money, poverty, % of people affected by drought, wars, and famine. Mathematics helps us to work out how to use resources wisely and how best to be responsible stewards of God’s creations.
