2024 Japan Exchange Tour

On 7 September 2024, 13 students and 3 teachers embarked on a trip to Japan.

After many hours sitting in the airplane, everyone was greeted with a humid atmosphere and spent a day and a half touring Osaka.

We then had to get accustomed to a Japanese student’s routine when attending Ono Senior High School. Waking up early, often before the sun rose and leaving school as it set, it was both tiring yet very rewarding. The school was deeply accommodating and welcoming of us, with student led clubs preparing activities and teachers doing their best to ensure we don’t leave their classes bored.

On the 12th of September we were lucky to experience their undoukai (sports day) that was very different to Brentwood's sports day. We got to see the whole school marching with their orchestra playing where they then had acting, speeches, dancing and of course relay events.  Brentwood students were able to compete in “oonawatobi” which is a skipping competition with half a class (20 people) skipping at a time. We were able to accomplish 7 consecutive jumps but were soon outranked with a class getting 52! Although it was a long and sweltering hot day of running and skipping, we had plenty of fun experiencing such an occasion.Alongside living and learning with our host student, we were able to visit Kyoto and spend time with them exploring Kinkaku Shrine and Kiyomizu Temple. Then, while visiting Hiroshima, we walked through history and felt the weight of its past and learned lessons and stories we were sure to remember. But perhaps the most emotional part of the trip came when we had to say goodbye to our host families. They had welcomed us into their homes and arranged various activities we could partake in to ensure we had the best time possible.

We spent our last few days in Tokyo and departed back to Melbourne on the 22 September.Having the opportunity to attend school in another country and experiencing Japanese culture firsthand with host families was wonderful and everyone was able to learn more about not only the language but also the culture.

Ono Senior High School Visiting in 2025

We will start planning for Ono's visit in 2025 very soon so we would like to invite expressions of interest from families who would like to host a Japanese student for 10 days.

If you are interested in hosting, please contact Angela Pollock for more information.

Year 11 Legal Studies Magistrates' Court Excursion

On Thursday 10th October, Miss Bull's Year 11 Legal Studies class headed to the Melbourne Magistrates' Court to see our criminal justice system in action. We are looking forward to taking Miss Lin's class next Thursday!

Hear from one of our Year 11 students, Caitlin, regarding her experience of the excursion:

To see the courts in action is a feat of engineering, where each case is systematically heard smoother than butter, one after the other. As the lowest court in Victoria's court hierarchy, the Magistrates' Court brings people from all walks of life together, and thus a variety of cases are heard. We heard a civil case, and then wandered down to the criminal level to hear a Magistrate berate a regular - though it was clear she just wanted the best outcome for him within the parameters of the law.

Unfortunately, we missed some of the more intense cases due to full courtrooms, but that did not stop us from witnessing a police investigator provide a remand summary. The Magistrate was accommodating and answered all questions, and I got an impression that the court system at this level is focused on rehabilitation and ensuring that we all live to the best of our abilities within the law.

Electronic device use at Brentwood Canteen

We would like to thank you for your continued support with the Personal Mobile Devices Policy. We have noticed students trying to utilise their phones as a payment method at the canteen and ask that families look to make other arrangements.

Mobile phones are not to be used at the canteen as they are not allowed to be in use between the school hours of 8.45am and 3.05pm.

Students can make payment via an EFTPOS card or cash.

Thank you for your cooperation.
