FAITH MATTERS
MRS ALISON WRIGHT - DIRECTOR OF FAITH & MISSION
In the Catholic tradition, November’s focus on remembrance invites us into a dual reflection: on both the lives of those who have passed and the ongoing call to live as instruments of peace. This remembrance holds special significance when we consider the context of war and the deep desire for peace that flows through the Church’s teachings.
Honouring those who have died—whether personal loved ones, saints, or those who sacrificed in times of conflict—calls us to respect their lives, their struggles, and their hope for a better world. Remembering the souls who have endured the horrors of war reminds us of the cost of peace, urging us to learn from the past and strive to prevent future violence. In doing so, we echo Christ’s message of reconciliation, where true peace is built on justice and respect for the dignity of all.
This month encourages us to pray not only for the souls of the departed but also for a world where conflict is healed, and harmony is restored. Through our prayers and reflections, we are called to honour the sacrifices made and work toward a future where peace is more than the absence of war but an active presence of justice and love in our communities. Remembering, then, becomes a commitment: to live in a way that transforms suffering into hope and moves us closer to the peace Christ envisions for us all.
Loving God, we come before You in this month of remembrance, holding in our hearts all those who have gone before us. We remember the saints, those we have loved, and all who gave of themselves, especially those who sacrificed in times of conflict for the good of others.
Grant them eternal rest, and may Your perpetual light shine upon them. As we honour their lives, inspire us to live with compassion and courage, seeking always the peace and justice You desire for the world.
Teach us to be instruments of Your peace, to heal divisions, to pursue justice, and to recognise the dignity of every person. May our remembrance of the past strengthen our resolve to build a future free from violence and filled with harmony.
Lord, deepen our hope in Your promise of eternal life and strengthen our commitment to follow the path of Christ, the Prince of Peace. Guide us as we work to create a world that reflects Your love and mercy, a world where true peace can flourish.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
