Stephen Gibbs: Queensland SES
Stephen Gibbs recently graduated from the 24India SES recruitment class. Below he explains more about the course and why he volunteers for Queensland SES. Congratulations on your achievement, Stephen, and thank you for sharing your story!
I graduated from the 24India adult recruitment class, which is a training for new recruits to join their local group with the Queensland SES. The course ran from the 14 - 15th, 28 - 29th September and the 12 - 13th of October, Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm.
Made up of over 10 trainers, we all went through courses in Ladders, Emergency Lighting, Debrief and Briefings, Participate in a Rescue, Operate Communication Systems, First Aid and Storm and Water Damage Operations. My favourite part was operating radios in the Operate Communication System course.
The SES is a voluntary emergency and rescue service created to assist communities across the country, broken down into each state of the country. We have over 5,000 volunteers and 7 regions across Queensland and are dedicated to disaster response, most commonly floods and cyclones, community education, search and rescue operations and supporting other emergency agencies.
The reason I joined is because I had witnessed first-hand the damage cyclones did, and that only strengthened when TC Jasper devastated Far North Queensland.
