Round the classes

Reception: Katie
Over the past two weeks, the Receptions have been busy learning about digraphs. In maths we have been learning about the problem-solving process working through this to solve problems. We have also been doing a lot of learning around gratitude and have been discovering the different ways we can demonstrate gratitude to another person. As part of our Geography work with Stephen’s class we have been learning about mapping and what a birds-eye view looks like. We have also loved our playtimes with the kindy and have been really enjoying Book Week.
Reception / Year 1: Jaya
Last week, Jaya’s Reception/1s and Kelly’s Year 1/2 class teamed up with Emma’s and Katie’s classes for another exciting Big Talk and Big Write collaboration. After phonics each day, students brainstormed, planned, and explored descriptive language to help bring their writing to life. Our story prompt was: Create a creature that lives in your backyard! This theme linked beautifully with our information report focus, as students thought carefully about their creature’s features, environment, diet, and how it protects itself—just like real animals.
We finished the week with a cross-age sharing session in the gym, where students proudly read and shared their stories, gave thoughtful feedback, and celebrated each other’s ideas. It was a wonderful way to showcase persistence, creativity, and growth in writing and storytelling.
Year 1/2: Kelly
For our Literacy and HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) learning we have been learning about information report writing. We have been discussing what 'facts' means and where can you find facts. As we are going to the zoo for an excursion this term (next Friday), we have been looking at animals who live in captivity. The children have been looking at what the animal has, can do and what it is. We have also been learning how to label animals by their characteristics (has) as well as finding out some interesting facts about the animal. We have been using epic readers and searching on the internet as well as using readers in the library for great resources.
Year 2/3: Emma
We have had yet another fun-filled fortnight of learning! Our entertaining book incursion was engaging, with two very humorous presenters. The students enjoyed the aspect which involved them choosing the next part of their performance. Another highlight involved cheering on the knockout football team from Uraidla playing at town oval! Our Big Write was a success, with all students taking pride in putting their planned ideas to paper. We enjoyed sharing our work with other classes in the gym to follow.
In literacy we have been looking at timeless narratives, our first text study is Tiddalick the Frog which has tied in nicely with our sustainability focus and the importance of conserving water. In maths we have been looking at the inverse relationship between division and multiplication, and all the strategies involved in helping us work out and solve our problems. Finally, we have continued our theme of sustainability, looking at ways of reducing, reusing and recycling. Our next project will involve reusing an item from home, that would otherwise have been thrown away, and creating a new purpose for it.
Year 3/4: Stephen
The students have started learning about fractions. Using some hands-on blocks (see the pictures) they have been able to see how a whole number can be partitioned into fractions such as halves, quarters, thirds and fifths. The students are re-visiting persuasive writing, focusing on using powerful vocabulary to bump up their texts. The next step is to record some short clips (advertisements) to understand how persuasive texts work in the real world. For art the students learnt how to draw some simple pictures using vanishing points, as per Patrick's.
Year 4/5: Rachael
Students have been highly engaged in designing "Wanted!" posters for some of fiction's most wanted villains as part of our book week activities! News reporters Maddi, Klara and Shae are seen here reporting on the The Grand High Witch from Roald Dahl's the Witches wanted for her cruelty against children. Other characters we are on the lookout for are Moon Face from the Magic Faraway Tree, the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Voldemort from Harry Potter and the Big Bad Wolf from the Three Little Pigs!
Our unit on persuasive texts continues with recent focus on using Dynamic Dialogue to add authority and interest to our writing. We have been inspired by a World Wildlife Fund campaign designed to raise awareness for lesser-known critically endangered animals. We have been working hard on developing our knowledge of multiplication strategies and using them to solve problems. Our young explorers have also been studying the continents of South America and Africa, their natural features and native animals as well as traditional foods and celebrations of various countries.
Year 5/6: Sallie
In the last month we have concentrated on our Information report writing and have completed a Brightpath assessment piece on this genre. Our assessment piece was on our favourite topic for the term....BIRDS. While I was away, Stela started our journey into persuasive writing. The students ended the week of learning with a debate, which they enjoyed. We have continued our spelling work and focusing on the grapheme "oor", "or" and "aw" and some prefixes and suffixes. For maths, we are continuing with measurement and are completing an investigation called Happy Hippos, where students have to mark animal enclosures on grid paper (to scale) and calculate how much food the animals will require. We are just completing the pre-activity requirements before starting our investigation. Our bird assignments are coming along nicely, and I am regularly learning new information about birds as students discover new and unusual things. This week we have had a Knockout football match, a girls and boys basketball carnival and are also enjoying all the great activities that come with Book Week. Jess also organised a great science incursion for all the classes to enjoy. We are lucky at Uraidla Primary that there are so many different opportunities for learning and engagement.

Knockout Football
This week selected year 4/5/6 students participated in a knockout football semi-final on the Uraidla town oval. Unfortunately, the team lost to Sellta Maris in a really tough game. Thank you to Sam Croser-Barlow for coaching and Rob Geytenbeek for goal umpiring. We have never made it this far in at least 15 years, so great effort, everyone!
Knock out Basketball
On the 27th August some year fives and sixes had a knockout basketball tournament. In the team was Eliose, Ellie. K, Jessica, Sophie, Lila, Tilly, Layla and Ruby. Before our first game Angela (Sophie's mum) taught us a layup and fake shorts, after that she explained the rules. We lost 3 out of 4 then we had a battle for 4th and 5th place against Crafers and we won that game. When it wasn't our turn, we went and watched the boys play their game. Overall, it was great fun and some of us got to learn a new sport. Written by Sophie and Ruby.
On the 27th of August some students from Year 6 played a boys' basketball competition. The students who competed were Ashton, Harrison, Arlo, Xavier, Louie, Innes, Callum and Harry. We lost the first game against Port Elliott and then we played against Mt Barker South and we won by about 20 points. Then after every game we had a break and watched the girls play. After our break we played against Meadows and won by about 20 points again. The other team that we beat was St Micheals. Then we had a crucial game against Yankalilla, which we had to win to get into the cross-over match against Handorf. We had a 30 minutes before our next game so we practised dribbling and passing in our spare time before the game. Then the game started, it was a very tight start, one team scoring after the other, then our coach called timeout and told us a tactic, and after that we were on a roll scoring and scoring, and then we ended up winning by 14 points. Big thanks to our coach Brad Wilksch who taught us tactics and coached all throughout the day, and also thanks to Ben Wiskin who scored all of our games. By Ashton and Harrison
Instrumental Music Band Workshop
On Tuesday August 26 (week 6, Term 3) 6 brilliant children (Gus, Jobe, Tilly, Louise, Edward, Jemima and Matilda) went to Mt Barker High School Hall to do an instrumental music workshop with students from other schools. The instruments we used were flute, clarinet, alto saxophone and trumpet. At 9:00am– 9:15am we arrived at Mt Barker High and signed in. Then at 9:15am – 12:30pm we started practising for the concert. Then at 12:30pm – 12:50 pm we did the concert. Then at 12:50pm we departed. It felt really good playing with the band and it also helped me with my music. Jobe Size
Choir News
Rehearsal for Festival of Music at the Entertainment Centre went extremely well, with 43 schools gathering to run through all of the songs the students have been practising in class in each Tuesday. It was an incredibly well-run afternoon and the choir is sounding fabulous! It's exciting for students to see all their hard work starting to pay off and we are looking forward to performance day on the 18th of September!
