Mathematics Report

University of Melbourne School Mathematics Competition
Wednesday 7 May saw 58 students from Years 7-12 attempt this 2–3-hour competition aimed at our very strongest Maths students. Congratulations to all and in particular to the following three students who have all had their work recognised by the University of Melbourne Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Year 7: Keonha Park – Merit
Year 9: Emin Borovac – Merit
Year 12: Qingyu Smith – Outstanding
This is another fantastic outcome – not just for these students but also for Unihigh which continues to produce such talented Maths students.
University of Melbourne School Maths Olympics
Unihigh has again participated in the annual SMO held during University of Melbourne Open Day on Sunday 17 August. This is the 27th SMO and we are proud to say that we have participated in each of these. Our two teams finished in positions 10 and 13 against some very strong competition. That said this remains a great event for our Year 12 students to work with and compete against very strong and enthusiastic mathematicians. This SMO continues to be organised by the student members of the Maths and Stats Society at the university which continues to draw Unihigh graduates. So it was great to see Christopher Tran (Class of 2023) popping over to us to say hello prior to the event beginning.
Our thanks and congratulations to the ten students seen here.
Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad
Consider the following question:
There are ten lights in a row, each of which may be switched on or off independently of the others. In how many ways can three lights be on and the others off so that no two adjacent lights are both on?
On Thursday 11 September, nineteen very determined students attempted this question alongside nine other questions in the annual AIMO. This four-hour event was tackled by all with patience and enthusiasm – it was fantastic to see them all concentrate and work for this time. Results will be available later in the year.
Maths Challenge
This 3-week activity was completed during Term 2 both in class and at home. Congratulations to the 99 students who participated and in particular to the 17 students who received a High Distinction for their work. They are as follows;
Year 7

Year 8
Ishaan Sharan, Max Parris, Shlok Kulkarni
Year 9

In particular, I would like to congratulate Max Parris (Year 8) and Keonha Park (Year 7) on receiving a Prize. And Angelina Cao, Chris Hong, Nathaniel Mitchell Wong, Lucas Tran (all from Year 7), Harshul Jhanwar, Lleyton Lim, Ishaan Sharab, Aren Li (Year 8); and Emin Borovac (Year 9) for achieving a High Distinction.
This just about wraps up our Mathematics Extension Program for the year. All that’s left is our Maths Games Day for Year 7s at the end of the year. Stay tuned for next year where we will again roll out a significant, demanding and rewarding range of events for all to consider.
