Year 3 Wellbeing - Everyone Belongs

The theme for 2024 is 'Everyone belongs'. When we all feel like we belong, bullying struggles to find a place. It's about embracing who we are, respecting everyone's differences and standing up together against unkindness.

The Year 3’s worked well to complete their trees that represent how they are connected to others in their communities. Belonging means we all have a role in preventing bullying. We're encouraged to speak up and create a safe place where everyone feels supported and respected, and our voices are heard and valued. We created a belonging tree to represent all the connections of people that support us every day.

On Monday the whole school wore a touch of orange to support the Bullying No Way Week - National Week of Action, running from 12th to 16th August 2024. It is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative and connects schools and communities to find workable solutions to prevent bullying. The Year 3's discussed what bullying means and ways to work together so that we are aware of the signs and how we can reach out for support.

Visual Arts

In Visual Arts, Year 3 have explored the properties of clay and used handbuilding techniques to model a clay Olympics medal. Once the medals dry, the students will paint and add a gloss to their artwork.

Soccer Gala Day

The Year 3 classes, along with our Year 4 class, headed to Hislop Reserve on Friday August 9th for a Soccer Gala Day round robin competition. The purpose of these days is to prepare our students for Interschool Sport, which occurs weekly in Year 5 and 6. It’s also an opportunity to watch students work in a team environment outside of the classroom.

We were blessed with gorgeous 19 degree sunny day and minimal wind. It lifted spirits and had our six teams (3 boy and 3 girl) compete very well. The children exemplified great spirit, fairness and passion for the day, emulating our Aussie Olympians in Paris. Most of our teams finished in the top half of their ladders which shows we have quite the athletic and talented cohort. A huge thank you to Mr O'Shea, Mrs Petracca and Mrs De Iullis for ensuring the day ran smoothly.

National Science Week

This week is Science Week. The school theme for National Science Week in 2024 is Species Survival - More than just sustainability. The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world.

Below are some DIY science activities that you may want to try at home with your child/ren.

Science Week Experiments

Year 1

The Year 1's have been learning about Earth and Space Science, in particular the Earth's resouces, day and night, and weather. During Science Week, they conducted a Tornado experiment using empty water bottles, coloured water and tape. The students learnt the 5 steps of conducting a science experiment: observe, wonder, predict, test, record and share. When the bottle was flipped upside down and swirled around, a 'tornado' appeared, demonstrating the movement and shape of a real tornado. The students also conducted the experiment without swirling the bottle, and they found that a 'tornado' did not form.

Students recorded their predictions and results. Below are some photos and a video to watch.

Prep

In Prep, the children learnt that there are little droplets of oil in milk and when we put soap in the milk, the soap likes to play chasey with the oil droplets. The colour then gets out of the way and makes colourful patterns.

The items needed for the experiment were a container, milk (full cream), cotton tips, dish detergent and food colouring.

If you would like to undertake the experiment at home, here are the steps:

Step 1: Pour milk into the dish

Step 2: Add little drops of food colouring into the milk

Step 3: Dip the cotton tips in dishwashing detergent and stick it into the food colouring. Watch the colour run away!

Watch the experiment in action below.

Year 3

As part of Science Week 2024, Year 3 looked into the theme of sustainability and conservation. All of the Year 3's came together to make a terrarium. They discussed that an ecosystem has living and non-living features. They then listed some living and non- living features of a healthy and thriving ecosystem. In the coming weeks, they will describe how their ecosystem changes over time. They started to write out their experiment and will now assess what qualitative changes they will see. Watch this space!
