Dear Members of the Academy Community,
From time to time over the course of a year, I am often led to reflect on the wonderful community that is the Academy and, in particular, on the remarkable students who form this community, and this was certainly the case last week following the Perform for Peace evening. This evening, organised by our Co-Captains, Leah Freeman and Sinitta McCarthy, focused on the suffering that permeates many parts of the world, especially the suffering caused through war. But, despite this, the concept of “Hope” permeated the evening – we cannot solve the plethora of problems in the world or eliminate war, but we can, in a very small way, make a difference through consciously being in solidarity with those on the other side of the world and through our fundraising efforts.
With “Hope” as the overall aspiration, many families accepted our invitation to come together in solidarity with the poor, marginalised and suffering people of the world and in a quest to make a positive difference. We were delighted that Moira Kelly, well known to many of us, and founder of the Creating Hope Foundation, was the keynote speaker on this occasion. This event was also supported by Young Mercy Links, a Mercy post school group whose members are passionate about social and environmental justice; advocacy and education; and celebrating community connectedness through volunteer service. A number of our former students belong to this group.
All in all a very significant evening with approximately $3,000 raised which will be sent to Caritas Australia, the Catholic Church’s international aid and development agency, two of whose members joined us for the concert.
Well done to our Co Captains, Leah and Sinitta and our Co-Justice Captains, Harriet Berman and Hannah Cullen for all their support and organisation.
As usual, it has been a busy start to Term 3. The subject selection process is well in place and we were very pleased with the number of parents who joined us last night for the online subject selection evening. I know parents will work closely with your daughters as they navigate this important period.
I wish you all a happy and rewarding Term 3, such an important term that includes a Study Tour to Italy and, of course, Mercy Day.
Every Blessing

May you meet mercy each day:
In the light of your own heart,
At the hands of your loved ones,
In the eyes of the stranger and the needy.
And if by chance you do not at first meet it,
Listen patiently for word of it,
And it will tap you on the shoulder,
A quiet surprise,
A small gesture,
The tender look,
Given and received in the encounters of your day.
