Stage 3 English
Year 5
This term, students will gain a deeper understanding of the textual concepts of ‘imagery, symbol and connotation’, ‘perspective’ and ‘context’. They will apply their understanding of imagery, symbol and connotation to analyse and experiment with composing different genres of poetry. Students will identify how perspective is conveyed through the authorial choices used in poetry. They will use figurative language and a range of literary devices to collaboratively create and perform a slam poem that evokes an emotional response from a live audience. Students will also create a written submission of their slam poetry which includes chosen images to reflect their knowledge and understanding of imagery, symbol and connotation elements.
Year 6
Through a blend of reading, analysing, and creating imaginative texts, students will discover the intricate techniques and devices used to evoke specific emotions and shape the audience's perspective. Students will extend their thinking of the role that imagery, connotation and symbolism have within texts as well as texts they will create themselves. Students will learn that figurative language devices such as similes, metaphors and personification are key to creating imagery in texts.
Soundwaves Program
For continued success in reading and spelling, Stage 3 will continue with a focus on phonemic awareness, synthetic phonics, morphology and etymology through the Soundwaves Program.
