VCE/VET Sport, Aquatic  & Recreation

By Katie Cook

Unit 1&2

Term 4 has been a busy and rewarding time for the Unit 1/2 VET Sport and Recreation students, who successfully completed their first year of the Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics, and Recreation. The final unit focused on exploring the Sport and Recreation industry, with students deepening their understanding of key concepts in sport, fitness, and recreation.

The term concluded with a major practical component—students planned, organised, and delivered their own three-day, two-night camp at Wilson’s Promontory, one of Victoria’s most stunning natural locations.

In small teams, students took responsibility for designing day walks, completing risk assessments, cooking on Trangias, pitching tents, and leading group hikes while sharing interesting facts about the area. This hands-on experience offered an excellent opportunity to apply classroom learning in a real-world setting and gain valuable insight into the outdoor recreation industry.

Over three days, students showcased outstanding resilience, teamwork, and adaptability—embracing all kinds of weather, supporting one another, cooking their own meals, and calmly adjusting plans when needed.

Camp Highlights:

Day 1: Upon arrival, students set up camp before tackling the Mount Oberon summit hike. Standing 558m high, the peak rewarded them with breathtaking 360° views of Tidal River, the coastline, and the Prom’s rugged peaks—even amidst wild winds and heavy rain! The evening concluded with a peaceful beach walk and a visit from a friendly wombat.

Day 2: With the weather clearing, students took on a challenging 15km trek from Darby Saddle to Tongue Point. The route offered incredible views of coastal cliffs and lush forest, with stops at Sparkes Lookout and Lookout Rocks. Tongue Point’s granite boulders and dramatic scenery were a highlight before continuing on to the tranquil Fairy Cove and finishing at Darby River. Back at Tidal River, students capped off the day with a refreshing swim and a relaxed sunset dinner on the beach.

Day 3: The final day saw students packing up before visiting the iconic Squeaky Beach, followed by the journey home.

The camp was an incredible experience for everyone involved—enhancing students’ understanding and appreciation of outdoor recreation, strengthening their leadership and teamwork skills, and embodying the school values of resilience and excellence.

Congratulations to all the students for their outstanding effort, teamwork, and commitment during the camp. This achievement not only highlights their dedication but also lays a strong foundation for success as they continue the course next year.

Unit 3&4

Term 4 marked an important milestone for our Unit 3/4 VET Sport and Recreation students, who successfully completed their Certificate III in Sports, Aquatic and Recreation while also preparing for their end-of-year VCE exam. This achievement is the culmination of two years of hard work, persistence, and a genuine commitment to learning.

Throughout the program, students have developed an in-depth understanding of the sport and recreation industry, building both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in areas such as leadership, activity planning, risk assessment, coaching, and managing groups. They have participated in a range of hands-on experiences—from organising school sporting events, coaching primary students, running year 7 camp, learning how to sail to leading group activities and outdoor programs—all experiences allowed them to apply classroom learning in real-world settings.

The successful completion of this nationally recognised qualification is a testament to each student’s dedication and drive. It has not only prepared them for future studies and careers within the sport, fitness, and recreation sectors but also equipped them with valuable life skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

Congratulations to all Unit 3/4 students on this outstanding accomplishment. Your effort, enthusiasm, and resilience have been exceptional, and I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching you and watching you grow over the past 2 years. The entire Warrandyte High School community is incredibly proud of everything you have achieved.
