Year 5 Update

📣 Hillsmeade Primary School – Year 5 Newsletter
Dear Families,
We’ve had a fantastic fortnight in Year 5!
Students have dived deep into some exciting learning experiences, showing curiosity, creativity, and collaboration across all areas of the curriculum. From hands-on activities to thoughtful discussions, it’s been wonderful to see their confidence and skills grow.
📚 English – Wonder Novel Study & Leadership Writing
This week, students have continued exploring the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Through engaging reading sessions, they’ve been developing their comprehension skills by making inferences, comparing character experiences, and analysing dialogue. We’ve had some rich discussions around empathy, kindness, and perspective-taking—key themes in the novel.
In writing, students have begun crafting their Student Leadership Applications. They’ve reflected on what makes a great leader and how they can contribute to our school community. It’s been inspiring to see their thoughtful responses and the pride they take in sharing their strengths and aspirations.
➗ Mathematics – Fractions & Equivalence
Our focus in Mathematics has been on equivalent fractions. Students have been using hands-on materials like playdough, fraction walls, number lines, and even fraction flags to explore how different fractions can represent the same value. They’ve also been learning to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa, and how to represent fractions in real-life contexts.
We’ve been so impressed with the students’ enthusiasm and mathematical thinking during these lessons!
👒 Hats & Uniform Reminders
As we enjoy the warmer spring weather, a friendly reminder that all students must wear their hats during recess and lunchtime. Please ensure your child’s hat is clearly labelled with their name.
With the changeable weather, jumpers are often taken off and left around the school. To help us return lost items, we kindly ask that all jumpers are clearly named.
👩🏫 Welcome Ms Sheers to 5E!
We are thrilled to welcome Ms Sheers to 5E on Mondays and Tuesdays. Ms Sheers is our Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader, and we are so lucky to have her back in the classroom. Her presence brings a wealth of knowledge and support to our students and staff.
Miss Hope will continue to teach 5E on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, ensuring consistency and a strong learning environment for our students throughout the week.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to another great week of learning and growth!
Warm regards,
The Year 5 Team
