Prep to Grade 2:

Prep
This term in Prep, our Little Learners have been exploring some fantastic new concepts! In literacy, we’ve been focusing on the sounds “tch” and “ch”, helping students recognise and use these sounds in their reading and writing. Using the mentor text “Wendy” as inspiration, the children have been writing their own simple sentences, building confidence and creativity as they put their ideas on paper.
In maths, we’re diving into the concepts of time and mass. Students are learning to tell time to the hour and half-hour on analogue clocks, so please keep practising reading o’clock times at home—it really helps reinforce their learning! We’re also exploring mass by comparing objects to understand which are heavier or lighter, using hands-on activities to make these ideas fun and meaningful.
1/2
This term, our grade 1 students have continued learning about split digraphs, having been introduced to the 'o-e' spelling (like in the word nose). Students have also learnt a handful of other graphemes for this sound including o, oe, and ow. This week, we have introduced some new silent letter combos including 'kn', 'gn', and 'ch' (like in chemist).
Grade 2 Students have been revising the 'y to i' morphology rule for adding suffixes when words end in y (cherry-- cherries), and alternative graphemes for /ear/ and /air/.
In Writing, we have loved working with Gus Gordon's book Wendy to inspire theplanning, drafting and finalising of our own narratives.
In Maths, we have kicked off the term with our measurement unit. Students have loved using the balance scales to measure and compare a range of objects.
