Numeracy

Alice Hamilton

I’m continuing with some weekly maths games this term! Maths games are such a rich way to teach multiple concepts, encourage discussion and foster a love of maths.

This week, I’m sharing another favourite, greedy pig, as well as a new game similar to greedy pig called the mouse, the cat and the cheese.

You’ll need:

  • A piece of paper & pencil
  • A 6 sided dice
  • At least 2 players (but the more the merrier!)

How do you play?

Whenever I play this game, I always tell the class it will make more sense when you play it! I’ve written some instructions, but to get a visual of the game, check out this video: Greedy Pig

  1. Choose a “poison” number on your dice (for example, your poison number might be 6)
  2. Roll the dice. If it’s your poison number, you’re out! If it’s not, you can decide if you want to keep playing or stop and hold on to your points.
  3. After each roll, you add your points together. You continue playing until you roll the poison number!

The next game is one I haven’t played before, but sounds similar to greedy pig and practises addition facts as well as opening up a discussion about strategy.

You’ll need:

  • A hundreds chart
  • 2 counters (you can use anything as long as they are two different colours)
  • A 6 sided dice

How do you play?

I’ll let Michael Minas teach you how to play this game! The Mouse, The Cat & The Cheese

Michael has a lot of resources with videos that show you exactly how to play on his Youtube page. I highly recommend!
