Year 5

Maths

In Year 5, we have been learning about location by exploring the x and y axes and how to plot and read coordinates on a Cartesian plane. Students have developed their skills in identifying and locating points accurately, creating their own grids and graphs. Building on this knowledge, we are now moving into collecting and correlating data. Students are designing their own survey questions, gathering responses, and using graphs to represent and interpret the information they collect. This helps them understand how data can be organised and used to make conclusions in real-life contexts.

Literacy

In Literacy, we are focusing on becoming more knowledge-rich by building our background knowledge about the continents around the world, the Great Lakes found within them, and understanding why these lakes play such an important role in supporting the global economy. We have also been learning about first and third person points of view in our writing, exploring how perspective can change the way a story is told. In addition, we have been studying the morphographs phon (meaning “sound”) and scope (meaning “to watch” or “see”), and discovering how these word parts help us understand and build new vocabulary.

We are loving our Fernhill visits and playing Bingo and card games with the residents!

Year 6

Maths

In Maths, the Year 6 students have been working on planning and conducting their own statistical investigations. They have been learning how to pose and refine questions to collect both categorical and numerical data through observations and surveys. Students are also identifying real-life problems, gathering relevant data, and then analysing and interpreting their findings. Finally, they are learning how to communicate their results clearly and effectively within the context of their investigations.

Literacy

Year 6 students have started reading Us Mob Walawurru, a book about life in a remote Aboriginal community and the experiences of the people who live there. Through this story, students are gaining a deeper understanding of Indigenous culture, connection to Country, and community life. They are also working on writing factual recounts, using information from the text to practise structuring their writing with clear sequences, accurate details, and strong topic sentences.

Year 6 Stall and Sleepout

Our Year 6 students have been working hard to put together business proposals, present their pitches to teachers, and organise their stalls for our St Vinnies Sleep Out. All money raised from the Year 6 stalls will go directly to support our local St Vinnies.
