Respectful Relationships in Term 4

At Sacred Heart, we continue to build a culture of care, inclusion and respect through the Respectful Relationships (RRRR) program. The teaching and learning activities within RRRR are aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, addressing key areas in both Health and Physical Education and Personal and Social Capability.

Key Points for Parents and Care Givers

  • The RRRR program aligns with the Victorian Curriculum.
  • Positive change in student attitudes and behaviour takes time and commitment as part of a whole-school approach.
  • A whole-school approach involves policies, practices and partnerships with families, communities and agencies, as well as classroom-based learning.
  • Collaborative, discussion-based learning helps students build critical thinking, communication and social skills.

This term, all classes from Prep to Year 6 are exploring Topics 4 and 5 (Problem Solving and Stress Management)

These topics help students develop practical strategies for managing challenges in positive and healthy ways. They learn how to think through tricky situations, resolve conflicts respectfully and care for their own wellbeing.

A Snapshot of Learning Across the School

  • Prep & Year 1: Students practise solving small playground or friendship problems using simple steps like Stop, Think, Do. They explore calming strategies such as deep breathing, mindfulness drawing and “five-finger breathing.”
  • Year 2 & 3: Through role-plays and discussion, students explore everyday dilemmas, make connections between choices and consequences, and identify early signs of stress. They learn helpful coping tools like talking to a trusted adult or taking a mindful break.
  • Year 4 & 5: Students consider real-life scenarios around teamwork, fairness and disagreements. They practise respectful communication and “win–win” problem-solving strategies, as well as ways to manage stress through exercise, gratitude and positive self-talk.
  • Year 6: Senior students explore personal and social dilemmas relevant to their stage of life, such as online interactions and leadership responsibilities. They practise empathy, perspective-taking and decision-making, and learn strategies for managing stress as they prepare for the transition to secondary school.

Through these lessons, we continue to nurture our students’ emotional literacy and resilience, helping them to grow as confident, respectful and kind members of our community. Attached is an example lesson from the Year 3/4 RRRR Curriculum, which can be adapted for younger or older students, or used as a conversation starter for families at home.
