Summer Sports Assembly

A Message from Our Principal, Mr. Darren O’Neill

At our Whole College Assembly this week, we had the opportunity to gather as a community to reflect and give thanks for our Summer Sports season. It also allowed the College to formally congratulate our very committed Rowers who recently completed their very successful season by retaining the Hamer Cup; to congratulate our First VIII Tennis team who won the Corr Cup (for the first time in over 30 years); and to acknowledge our College Swim Squad who performed well at the recent PSA Carnival.

Our assembly afforded us with an opportunity to acknowledge all students who played and enjoyed our season of summer sport with some individual students awarded trophies for their consistent effort and service throughout the season. Each respective Sport Captain reflected on the season past, acknowledged team members and thanked coaches and parents for their ongoing support. What was particularly pleasing to hear within the respective addresses was the recurring theme of showing appreciation for effort, commitment, teamwork and fair play.

Our Summer season of Sport consisted of 12 rounds of fixtures, commencing in Term 4 and finishing only last week. Over Thursday and Friday afternoons, and on Saturday mornings, we have had over 70 teams and nearly 1300 students proudly representing the College across six different sports and in Swimming. This certainly allowed for a thorough test of skills and teamwork and a deep examination of commitment across all sports and within teams.

Throughout this term, I have had the great pleasure of getting around to see most teams and at all levels, across all sports. What I have enjoyed the most is the way our students, representing the blue and green of Trinity College, have participated. They have done so with a real sense of pride, commitment, a determination to compete well and with an attitude of supporting teammates and playing fairly. It is that sense of respecting each other and the contest that I am particularly proud of.

As part of a holistic education, Trinity College prides itself on offering a great variety of opportunities for all students. It is in this sense of developing the whole person and the young TC man, where the College values the place of sport as one of our four pillars. Sport is a medium by which important lessons for life can be learned. Things such as respecting authority; the value of competition; commitment and perseverance; appreciating the reward that comes through hard work and commitment; and valuing the importance of teamwork and cooperation - all have parallels within sport. While the pursuit of winning is in itself a worthy goal, it is the valuable lessons learned on the way that should be most prized.

To play and work alongside your ‘Brothers’ – at whatever level, is a privilege that not every school student is provided. As has been mentioned previously, you only get out of school, what you put in. This is particularly true at Trinity College. Those boys who consistently apply themselves and commit to all aspects of College life, unsurprisingly, are the same boys who achieve great success, have purpose and become leaders amongst their peers. As we look to commence our Winter season in Term 2, all boys are reminded to stay true to their character, respect the TC Spirit of playing hard, but fair, commit fully to their team and team-mates and to apply themselves in a way that allows them to gain the most from such opportunities.

I would like to sincerely thank the large number of staff and external coaches that have taken on a coaching or managers role throughout this summer season. The manner in which our coaches engage with our boys, and the tone of respect and sportsmanship that they insist upon, is wonderful to see and greatly appreciated. I would particularly like to offer special thanks to Mr Ryan Lockyer (Director of Sport) and Mr John Black (Sports Administrator) who oversee all of our PSA Sport and carry much of the responsibility to ensure that teams, fixtures, venues, umpires and buses are organised every week.

Sport can be a great teacher if we are open to the lessons it presents. Thank you for your ongoing support of all the boys.

Live Jesus in our hearts

Summer Season Wrap

It is with immense pride that I commend each and every student for their hard work, dedication, and to achieving the highest standards throughout the summer season. I personally extend my heartfelt thank you to our staff, coaches, and students for their remarkable contributions, as their collective efforts have led to fantastic successes that have brought pride to Trinity College.

A special acknowledgment goes to Mr. Phil Jurjevich, Mr. Mat Doyle, and our exceptional rowing team for their stellar performance at the Head of the River Regatta. Their achievement of securing their 16th Hamer Cup (breaking the old record of 15 by Aquinas College) is truly exceptional.

Furthermore, our 1st VIII tennis team, led by Mr. Geoff Jamieson and Mr. Brandon Porcaro (’14), brought home the Corr Cup after a 35-year drought. Their resilience and determination through injuries, absences, and tough opponents were a testament to the values we uphold at Trinity College.

As we celebrate Trinity’s accomplishments, everyone must remember the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and support for one another. Together, we have achieved great things, and together, we will continue to strive for excellence in all that we do.

Congratulations to all and thank you for your continued efforts and dedication.

ACC Inclusive Swimming Carnival

On Tuesday, 26 March, four Trinity College students completed in the ACC Inclusive Swimming Carnival. It was held at Claremont Aquatic Center and involved a number of schools from Perth.

We competed in several group swimming races which built our confidence and team spirit. We enthusiastically swam the whole day having so much fun along the way. I was so happy to be awarded Under 14 Boys champion for any stroke. We all did a great and we can’t wait to do it again next year.

Trinity College Cross Country Championships

Tuesday, 26 March

Earlier this week, Trinity’s endurance running enthusiasts turned out in record number to compete in the second running of our Cross Country Carnival after the inaugural success of last year.

Open to all students by nomination, it’s aim is to serve as an opportunity for students to further demonstrate the “Spirit of Excellence” and strive to be a part of the College’s team at the SSWA Interschool event next term.

Using the same pacy 3km course created last year (encompassing Mann Oval & across the Matagarup Bridge to Optus Stadium), runners enjoyed excellent conditions and it was fantastic to see so many students challenging themselves and performing exceptionally.

The positive attitude and enthusiasm from the students on the day was undoubtedly in respect of the great effort put in by many staff in preparation.

The top placing students for each year group were as follows:

Many personal bests were achieved through hard work and special mention is deserved for our School Champion Daniel Russo (10.4) who is the deserving recipient of the Perpetual Trophy for the fastest runner across the course on the day (9.46 minutes) – Brilliant effort, Daniel!

Special thanks are extended to the HPE and supporting teaching staff for their outstanding efforts with carnival logistics as well as to the administrative, grounds and maintenance staff involved for their exceptional teamwork in ensuring the event ran so smoothly.
