Pentridge Prison
On March 1st the Year 10 Law and Year 12 Legal studies classes travelled to Melbourne to visit Pentridge Prison. The Year 10 students enjoyed the B Division tour while the Year 12’s enjoyed the H Division tour. The purpose behind the visit was to get an understanding of prison conditions, the nature of punishment and whether prison was an effective form of punishment for certain crimes.
Students were asked to reflect on the day:
- What surprised me was how small the cells were.
- How in the early days of the prison, prisoners were first put in solitary confinement.
- It looked scary.
- Prison may not be a suitable punishment for some crimes.
Life as a Politician
The Year 10 Law students welcomed Julianna Addison, Member for Wendouree, to their class last week. At first the students were unsure of what to expect from Julianna but all the students found the session interesting. Julianna spoke about why she got into politics and what her life was like as a politician. Students where happy when she answered all of their questions and provided clarity on the role of a politician and government.
Some of their questions included:
- Is it hard to get into politics?
- How do you balance your work life with family?
- What is your experience as a female politician?
