SENIOR GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAM SMR CHAMPIONS

On Friday the 2nd of August the Senior Girls Football Team went to Langwarrin Reserve for the SMR round robin.

The day started off playing our first game against Narre Warren south SC which we won with the score 60 to 0. Then we played Mentone Girls and we won 36 to 0. The last game in our pool was against Nossel SC and we won 45 to 0. We headed into the final game with confidence as we versed SEDA. The first half we got out to a flying start scoring 3 goals. SEDA fought back, keeping it in their 50 for the last 5 minutes of the first half to score two points. The second half the girls came out and kicked another 3 goals with the final score 36 to 1. An incredible effort to keep all 4 teams on the day goal less.

Amazing effort being the first McKinnon SC Senior girls footy team to make it to the State Finals! Good luck to the team and the coaches!

INTERMEDIATE GIRLS SOCCER SMR CHAMPIONS

On Friday 2 August, the Intermediate Girls Soccer team set off to Kingston Heath Soccer Complex in the hope of coming home with the title of Southern Metropolitan Regional Champions.

The day started off strong, securing a 5-0 win over Narre Warren. This determination and perseverance proved helpful when coming up against Albert Park Secondary College, the hardest game of the day. A hard-fought victory of 2-1 was achieved and put the girls at the top of their pool and they only needed to win or draw their final pool game against Gleneagles Secondary College.

By the final whistle, the score was 4-0 in McKinnon's favour, sending the girls into the Grand Final against Frankston High School. It had been a tiresome day, but the girls knew that in order to win they had to use their last bit of energy. The game proved challenging with a halftime score of 0-0 but displayed their strength and effort in order to obtain a 2-1 win, making them Regional Champions and set to compete for the state title. They had a tremendous effort for the whole day and ensured that they worked as a team.

Well done girls!  Come on State Finals!

SENIOR BOYS SOCCER SMR FINALS

I used to think Kingston Heath Soccer Complex near Moorabbin Airport was a wind tunnel but we now have a new contender in Casey Fields. Bob Dylan would play midfield, searching for the answer and just be buffeted rather than blowing in the wind. On Wednesday 24 July the Senior Boys Soccer team ventured to Cranbourne East for their shot at getting to a State Final. Unfortunately, it was not to be. The team performed creditably in difficult conditions for all schools.

In the opening game against Narre Warren South the highlight was a cracking goal from Alex Varelas (Year 12) cutting in from the left flank to chip the keeper with considerable aplomb and from considerable distance. I spoke to the keeper after the game and we both agreed he was in the right position but there was nothing he could do, a phenomenal goal giving McKinnon the win.

The second game against Dandenong contained another moment which would be pivotal again from Alex Varelas but this time it would not cross the line. A left foot chip beat the keeper with everyone from both sides expecting the ball to roll over the line near the right post. The wind had other ideas as it rolled across the goal line, teased us at the left post and then back into play. Dandenong then scored in the second half and while chasing a last-minute equaliser with McKinnon pushing numbers forward from a corner, Dandenong scored again with the last kick of the game.

Going into the third game, McKinnon needed to win and be reliant on other results against Gleneagles, State Finalists from last year. They scored early and with half time results not going our way in the other group game, the game was opened up in the hope that a miracle might occur, but it was not to be.

The boys can certainly hold their heads high as at SMR it really was a competitive and even affair. I was proud of the effort the boys made in getting to SMR. Special thanks to all those boys who trained and tried out for the team, even those who did not make the squad. Special thanks to Ben Mason (Year 12) who captained the side admirably throughout the year. I also appreciate the efforts of Campbell Henderson (Year 12) as my assistant and the efforts of Gordon Choi (Year 11) and Caelan Appleford (Year 11) who were linesmen on the day.

SMR SQUAD: Isaac Albanis (Year 11), Markis Angelatos (Year 12), Gerry Angelatos (Year 12), Daniel Bronshtein-Kopman (Year 11), Michal Foroncewicz (Year 12), Oliver Iser-Lau (Year 11), Cristian Karavenzas (Year 11), Peter Kats (Year 11), Ben Mason (Year 12), Caolan McLaughlin (Year 12), Tim Nicolaides (Year 12), William O'Brien (Year 12), Igor Pasichnyuk (Year 11), Luke Sagiadelis (Year 12), Austin Seeto-Grossi (Year 12), Izak Solomon (Year 11), Alex Varelas (Year 12) and Andrew Wiraatmadja (Year 12).

SENIOR GIRLS BADMINTON SMR FINALS

On Wednesday 24 July the Senior Girls Badminton team played in the Southern Metro Region finals at Springers.

Drawn in the pool of death McKinnon started off with a narrow 3-3 victory over Cranbourne East winning by 3 points. We then played McRob who defeated us convincingly 6-0 and Nossal who won 5-1 against us. The girls fought hard all day and represented the school with pride and great spirit.

The McKinnon team performed admirably throughout the day, winning their first round against Minaret College Springvale 5-1. They then had the opportunity to play against the traditional heavyweight of Mac.Robertson Girls’ HS. Unfortunately, they could not overcome their more experienced opponent losing a few very tight contests two games to three. As a result, they were unable to advance to the next phase of the competition.

However, the team did manage to come 2nd in their pool. Well done!

After convincingly winning their match against Keysborough 5-1, the team were unfortunately knocked out by Melbourne High despite heroic efforts from Jasper Wong, Peter Kats and Carter Goh, with all putting their opponents under enormous pressure and only narrowly losing their games.

Great effort everyone.
