From the Head of Sport

Head of Sport Report

We are now well into organisation of winter sports with all team selections complete. If you are unsure if you have made a team please check the BMGS Sports noticeboard outside my office for team lists.

If you have made a team you need to ensure that you have ordered your uniform prior to the end of the term. The Uniform Shop has temporarily relocated to Coorah.

Just a reminder to all our athletes competing along external pathways. Please email me information of your achievements so that you can be recognised by the school.

Athletics

We had a number of our students compete at the NSW Junior Athletics Championships at the start of the month with many gaining good results and progress through to Nationals.

Congratulations to the following students:

Amelie Hugo recently competed in the NSW Junior Championships and won a bronze medal in the U18 400m, running a PB and another National qualifying time. She also ran a qualifying time for the 200m and will be competing in the Australian Track and Field Championships in Adelaide in April.

Last weekend Amelie wrapped up her Little Athletics career with a silver medal in the 400m and a PB in the 100m and 200m at the NSW Little Athletics State Championships.

In the Little Athletics State Championships over the weekend, Alton Freeman competed in the under 15s 3000m on Friday evening, placing sixth in the state. On Saturday, he ran the 1500m, again placing sixth, and on the Sunday he ran the 800m, placing 7th, achieving personal best times in all 3 races.

Previously he had run his first ever 2000m Steeplechase, managing to place 3rd in the state, gaining a bronze medal and running a national championships qualification time. So now he's off to Adelaide in the school holidays to hopefully run well in this event against the best in Australia.

Other achievements at recent NSW Athletics events include:

Zara Nicholas - 5th in the U17 long jump and 6th in the triple jump.

Keeden Harrison – 4th in the 2000m steeplechase.

Well done to all our Little Athletics competitors.

Basketball

Over the past two weeks Eric Downes has been competing in the NSWCIS Championship Basketball Games. The team took home the ISA/AICES shield with a convincing win. This game was followed by ISA v CAS at Knox where the boys unfortunately could not keep pace with the CAS boys. To finish off the competition they played GPS where they held the lead for the majority of the game and were unlucky to go down to GPS in the last two minutes.

Football Refereeing

Aleesha Naumann is becoming an outstanding referee and recently attended the HICES gala day with our Junior school team. This is the second year that Aleesha has been the delegated referee and all the feedback from the day is positive. Well done Aleesha and thank you for giving up your time for this event.

Mountain Biking

This term 9 BMGS boys headed down to Thredbo to compete in the annual Boost Mobile Australian MTB Inter-schools. The events included downhill, enduro, flow and pump track races across each of the age groups. Amongst over 100 schools and 1600 individual riders, the boys performed very well over the week long competition. Lots of smiles and 'almost' unscathed, with one of our fastest riders Neil Geikie taking a tumble in practice before his final race. Hope you're on the mend Neil!!

Many thanks to the boys who represented BMGS proudly and we're all looking forward to 2025. Participants: Samuel Hay (Year 6) Lucas Rutherford (Year 7) Max Pilla (Year 8) Marlow Terry, Xavier Johnson (Year 9) Oliver Rutherford, Dylan Robilliard, Neil Geikie and Joshua Beitsch (Year 10). Thanks also to all the parents who have helped in the organisation and logistics of getting our team to the event. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by all the boys.

Downhill Racing

Fabian Boda-Tulogdi demonstrated exceptional talent and resilience at the downhill National Championships in Adelaide. Despite encountering a minor setback during the race run, Fabian's remarkable 5th place in the seeding round and consistent performance throughout the series, resulted in a commendable 10th place in the under-17s age group.

Show Jumping

Thalia Boda represented Blue Mountains Grammar School at the annual Arndell show jumping competition on the 2nd March, competing in the 65-70cm class. Despite narrowly missing the top 5 placement in her age category, Thalia did very well throughout the day and should be congratulated.

Netball

This week we have received details of Olivia Harris’s continued success in Netball.

Olivia has been successful in being chosen to compete at the 17U & 19U 2024 National Netball Championships.

Olivia is to be congratulated on her selection in the Netball NSW State team. She has been training since January in preparation for the National tournament and we wish her all the very best. The Australian National Netball Championships will be held from the 8th April.

Cross Country

The BMGS Cross Country carnival will be held on Tuesday 9th April. All students are expected to participate. The carnival is held onsite and students will be required to wear their BMGS track pants/shorts with their House polo.
