Bella Child (Year 7), who spoke at the City of Hobart Together Festival 2024 on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination as part of national Harmony Week celebrations.

Bella described what multiculturalism looks like, feels like, and sounds like and why a multicultural city is important.

'Multiculturalism describes the way society embraces cultural diversity so that all people regardless of their creed or culture feel not only supported but respected; they feel a sense of belonging and connection. They feel at home.

Cultural diversity makes our world a magical place because it opens the door to different traditions and cultures.'

Most importantly, Bella suggested ways in which we can make Hobart a 'welcoming city' for all, including looking at how new residents are welcomed upon arrival at the Hobart Airport, implementing QR codes around the city so that people could navigate the streets with confidence, and hosting a multicultural festival as the 'perfect way to champion diversity.'

Bella concluded her speech by citing the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity:

'Cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature. In this sense, it is the common heritage of humanity and should be recognized and affirmed for the benefit of present and future generations.'

Congratulations Bella for being such a wonderful advocate for the College and reinforcing the message that we must all walk toward the goal of inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, from the Traditional Owners of the land to our most recent arrivals.
