SCHOOL FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP!

Our five students who were selected to attend the School for Student Leadership have safely arrived at the campus in Marlo – which is in Far East Gippsland at the mouth of the Snowy River.

Our TLSC students have been paired up with students from Bass Coast High School. The teams have leaped straight into the program with a positive and energetic attitude which augurs well for a great term. They have had a busy two weeks, getting used to the routines at Snowy, 6.30 am starts, and lots of physical activity. Alongside learning key skills related to leadership and respectful relationships, students have so far participated in mountain bike riding, camp fires, a bush dance, raft making and canoeing!!

Here are some photos from their adventures so far and their own reflections:

Tuesday 30th of April

Today we went canoeing for the first time, it was the first time we had gone

out of school for an activity because surfing was cancelled. It was definitely a new experience for me. I gave it a try because I knew it was going to be fun after we got used to it and it did. Firstly we just learnt the different ways to paddle and rotating the canoe's. I was partnered up with Will first and it was definitely difficult, and the back and front spot was exhausting for the arms. I think it went pretty well. – Joshua Siah 9G

Sunday 28th April

Yesterday was really fun we had our first recharge day a recharge day is on Saturday we can do whatever we want. Me and a group of 7

others went in the forest zone 4 and did a walk. We had lots of fun. We came back for morning tea and it was good. We then went out one last time with a new but mostly the same group. We ended up going a little too far and made it to the road so we went back and found some new places. We got a little lost but we found the way. We then went to Spirit Spot where we go to the sand dunes across the road (so we went back to where we got lost) and find a spot to have for the rest of the time we are here for. We can read or draw do whatever we want, I was just playing in the sand for most the time.

Thursday 25th April

The first thing we had in the morning was the an Anzac day ceremony. I and some others created poppies to place around the campus, which we stayed up late doing. Since coming to this camp Anna, Josh, a few others, and I have had rice "withdrawals". So we decided to ask the kitchen to help make a rice dish for the student on recharge day (a day where we get to do anything - including cooking). We then learnt about conflict in one of the activities. We had to set up a tent the quickest and unfortunately my team did not win. The activity was supposed cause conflict between teammates but it wasn’t that successful. I was able to do some laps around the campus with mates for the sports challenge they set today. I also completed my goal from yesterday. "talking to more people".

Friday 26th April

I was also a little disappointed with the fact we couldn't surf due to the weather conditions, but I also feel a little grateful, as we would have had surfing and mountain biking in one day, which would have made us incredibly tired. We did run into a few issues;

  • The bikes I had to use had a few issues, but we solved those issues and also worked around the issues we might not of had time to resolve,
  • One of the tracks we had to be resilient as it was a bit hard to follow and we ended up having to just ride through a bit of bush.
  • One other problem was I offered to help others get their bike out of the bush area, as it was a bit hard to get out of.

Even with these issues, bike riding was really fun and I enjoyed it, as it pushed us passed our comfort zone a little bit.
