Hands On Learning
Hands On Learning (HOL)
The HOL program has been run at Taylors Lakes Secondary College for five years and in 2024 is being led by Monica Marsiano and Russell Blackie.
The program aims to provide a day a week alternative to the classroom for students.
These may be disengaged learners or have other reasons to benefit from meeting in a supportive group while learning real world skills. The local HOL staff work online with the HOL community.
This year the HOL group have been working through four wood-based projects. These have included a toolbox, a bird house and currently a serving tray due for completion in time for Mother’s Day.
The HOL students choose to take their completed work home which is a positive outcome.
The priority within the HOL room is always safety and students are provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses and ear protectors.
The wood-based project materials are created by the HOL staff at TLSC and the student focus is primarily on learning wood working skills with hand tools.
HOL will be visiting the local Bunnings store in May to take part in the first of two scheduled whole day DIY projects that the company provides as a community service. As well HOL will continue a liaison with our local Early Childhood centre providing wood crafts.
In addition to the HOL base in room T3 the group undertakes daily maintenance tasks around the School including painting, recycling and supporting Café 3038.
There are a number of initiatives that are being developed this year including the further development of the cottage garden.
The HOL program runs on a semester basis and is happy to accept potential nominations at any time from TLSC staff including one day try outs.
