Connect: Year 1

Hello families. We can't believe we're nearly at the end of term 1! We finish next Thursday 28th at 2:30. We are so proud of how well the students have made the transition from Prep to Year One. Thank you for all the positive conversations you have had at home to make this term so successful.

Classroom helpers- Thank you to those who came to the classroom helper training session. We were so happy to see such a good turnout. It really helps the students and the teachers to have the extra support. If you missed it speak to Kim Weissenburger.

Now, scroll down to see what we have been up to in the classroom this week.

What we are learning in Grade 1

Literacy

Students have been learning to say, read and write the phoneme ‘y’ as in ‘spy in the sky’ and 'oa' as in 'goat eating toast'. We have been looking for these sounds in the books we are reading. To end the term we will revise all the sounds learnt this term. We don't expect that the students can now spell all these words but we hope they are more successful reading words with these sounds. We will also continue to work on sentence structure while exploring our mentor text 'Wombat Stew'.

Numeracy

During maths students have been working on addition and subtraction vocabulary and strategies for solving equations such as counting forwards and backwards, using counters and hundred squares. They were able to solve simple real life problems with these methods. Week 9 will be a chance to revisit the work from the term.

 Wellbeing

Term one has the wellbeing focus of Emotional Literacy. Students have been developing their ability to recognising and identifying their own and others emotions using the language of the Zones. They may tell you if they are in the blue, yellow, green or red zone. Students are continuing to earn Dojo points for displaying the Skye Primary School values relating to Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Relationship. We have connected parents to the Dojo platform so you will now be informed when they receive points.

Inquiry

Term One sees Grade 1 exploring the Inquiry topic 'Celebrating Differences'. Students enjoyed the Inquiry Day where they got to learn about the celebrating the differences and exploring the culture of India, Italy, China and Nigeria. Ask them about what they discovered.
