Thrive Innovate Grants

Winning ideas receive funding

At the end of term 2, grants for the Thrive Innovate program were allocated to successful applicants. The Northcote Thrive Fund is a program funded by the generous support of our families, alumni and local businesses. One of the four purposes of the program is to fund innovative ideas and projects put forward by students and staff.

This year to encourage more students to consider Thrive Innovate applications, we used House Connect Lessons during Term 2 to get students to brainstorm and pitch ideas. Students worked on these over 2 lessons and teachers had a guided lesson plan with resources to try and inspire students and provide structure to help with their applications.

Students needed to explain how their ideas aligned with our school values and were innovative and how their project would benefit Northcote students or the community. Students also needed to demonstrate the capacity to deliver the outcomes and explain how they would plan and manage the project and resources.

The process was a success and the Thrive school panel later looked at the finalists’ proposals and decided on whether or not the project would be awarded 10 grants of up to $1000 to implement their innovative ideas.

Some of the successful ideas included promoting recycling through additional recycling bin and the implementation of a container deposit scheme for the school. Other ideas were to create a mural for the new STEM building; starting a Models and Figures club to promote another type of creativity; creating an online space for the school magazine The Spiel to make it more accessible to the school community.

Congratulations to all our successful applicants. However, the work is not done yet as they now must work with the school to implement their ideas and projects!
