Our State Cross Country competitors

Cross Country : Regional and State

Congratulations to our Regional Cross Country team who travelled to Kilmore Racing Club on June 19 to compete in the Regional Cross Country Event.  With a team of 60 students competing, Northcote had a great day out. We had a lot of success with many of our students bringing home medals for both individual and teams. When not competing our students enjoyed cheering on all of our team members as they came down the home straight.

From the Regional competition, we had 16 students who qualified to compete at the State Cross Country Championships, which was held on July 18 at Yarra Glen Race track. The weather conditions on the day were better than expected with the rain holding off for our runners. Although the rain in the lead up to the event meant that the track was very heavy and slippery and muddy.  Some would say they were true cross country conditions!  All of our team members took this in their stride and did their best whilst representing our school.  Our best placed team members were Mads Doughty, Olive Nicholson and Grace Whitty, who came 3rd in the 17-20 Girls teams event.

Year 7 Division Badminton

Our Year 7 Badminton players had a successful day at the Darebin Community Sports Stadium. Adele Lenne was a standout in the girls' singles as her determination to give her best each and every point was fantastic to see. On the boy’s side of the fixture, Oscar Sharp did not let the fact he was playing in a moon boot stop him from leading our boys A team in the singles matches. His repeated dives for the shuttlecock were inspiring to all who were watching. Kevin Lin and Anson Hui formed a dynamic duo in the boy’s doubles and their teamwork led to great team success. While Northcote did not achieve the overall success we had hoped for, the way our students conducted themselves and interacted with the opposition was a great reflection on the school.

Year 7 AFL

On June 20 our Year 7 Boys/Mixed AFL team travelled to JE Moore Park in Reservoir to compete in the Divisional Competition.  The team all played well together and showed great team spirit whilst competing for our school.  Thank you to Mr Boyce for coaching the team.

Year 7 Girls Netball

On the 24th of June the year 7 girls A and B teams competed at Narrandjeri Stadium against the schools in our district. The girls B team faced Thornbury High B team first, winning 12 to 1 it was a fun game and all our teammates played fantastically. The second game was against Laylor in which we won 21 to 2. We played really well especially in defence. After a quick lunch break, we played Reservoir High where we won 18 to 3.

Our whole team played really well especially Zia, Isobel and Greta in defence. Annie, Jane, and Scarlett in Shooting and lastly Danica, Chloe and Edie in Mid court. We would like to thank our coach Emily in year 9, all the teachers that were there to support us and all the other schools who participated.

Senior Regional AFL

Last term in June, our year 11 and 12 boys went to Oak Park Oval to represent our school and compete in regional footy. Unfortunately, they were unable to make it through. Heroic efforts like Jay turning up a game late to kick a goal from the pocket with his first touch, and Harry Kooloos’s 30 touch effort were unable to get them over the line due to the lack of manpower and the numerous absences on the day proving to be too much to make up for. We hope to bring it home next year.

Year 7 Soccer

On Wednesday the 26th of June, the Year 7 girls soccer team travelled to Darebin International Sports Center to compete in a division level competition. They played 3 games throughout the day and fought very hard in all of their matches. The first game was against Lalor where they won 4-2. A great start to the day and with confidence the girls won their second game 5-0 against Lalor North. They went on to the finals by winning their pool and played Thornbury High. The girls played a great and challenging game against them but unfortunately were beaten 0-2. Every player put in an amazing effort during all of their games, but some that stood out were Olive and Neeah, and the goal shooters Mia and Maisie L. Thank you so much to Louisa Patterson and Pauline Dridan for coming with us, and to Scarlett and Lex for coaching alongside me.

The year 7 boys soccer team had a great day on the park. Finishing the group stage undefeated, the team played a very disciplined game in the final to win 3-0. The teamwork and effort shown from all players was fantastic, and the next round will be an exciting test for this very talented team. Special thanks to Raff and Leon in year 9 for being great coaches for the day!

A big thank you to our Student Coaches Astrid, Scarlett Madder, Lex Johnstone, Leon McCormack and Raf Petruzzello-Carr who all did an amazing job coaching our Year 7 Soccer Teams.
