Chess Team

Competing at the Northern Star Chess Tournament

At the end of last term, Northcote High school chess team went to King Khalid College to compete in the Northern Star Chess Tournament. Our chess team members included Oscar Sharp (NHS Chess Captain), Darini Seng, Flynn Lim Thorne, Oliver Stephens and Azura Baglioni.

The students played seven games each, earning points for their wins and draws. Oscar won 4.5 out of his seven games; Flynn won 3 from 7 and Oliver also won 3 out of 7 games.

The chess tournament was a fantastic day for students to play other schools and learn new chess skills. All students enjoyed the competition experience and had lots of fun competing against other students from different schools, including Preston High School; Australian International Academy; Lowther Hall; Mount Alexander College and Banyule Primary School. More importantly, the students competed once again in the spirit of good sportsmanship and respect for their opponents.

Some student comments on the experience:

I thoroughly enjoyed it, and was really happy to win a prize in the third round.- Azura
I played the absolute worst games of my life and I wish I could take backback all my moves. -Flynn
It was fun to meet new people in a competitive environment. -Darani
