PEER SUPPORT LEADER PROGRAM

A peer support leader is a person who is committed to being a leader within their school. 

The St Joseph’s College Peer Support Leader Program is offered to Year 9 students who are interested in developing their leadership skills and being involved in welcoming our Year 7 students to our school community. As a peer support leader, students had the opportunity to help ‘mentor’ and aid in our new Year 7 students' transition into secondary school.

These students attended the Year 7 Community Day early last term and made an impressive commitment to attending Year 7 classes throughout Term 2 to run reflective activities with our Year 7 cohort. 

I congratulate our peer support leaders on their commitment and dedication to developing their confidence and stepping outside their comfort zone to support our Year 7 students as they settle into secondary school. This has also been an enjoyable experience for our Year 7 students as they build connections with our peer support leaders.

Peer support was a great experience and an amazing opportunity to build up my confidence and friendship throughout the school. The first thing we did in peer support was a training day at the end of 2023 where we learnt the activities we would do with the Year 7s. In peer support we helped run activities with the Year 7 students on their Community Day in Term 1. 

In Term 2 we went into the Year 7 classes three times over a six-week period. When we went to the classroom, we ran activities with the Year 7s to build up their friendships and to be more confident with themselves. Thank you to Mrs Birnie for arranging this amazing experience.
