Principal's Message

Principal’s Message

Winter has set in, and the top and tail of each day are much darker than before. We are not far from the Winter solstice, a reminder of the cycles of nature and the warmth of community that carries us through these colder months.

Congratulations to the Humanities Team for putting on Medieval Day! I managed to get to the archery just before lunch, and it was terrific. Many thanks to all the Year 8 students and Humanities staff for dressing up and getting into character on the day. This event beautifully showcased our school values of creativity and achievement, as students and staff alike immersed themselves in the historical experience, demonstrating both their knowledge and their imaginative skills.

In the first week of June, we recognised National Reconciliation Week. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds, and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This important week highlights our commitment to inclusivity and the empowerment of all students through education and understanding. It is an opportunity for us all to reflect on our shared histories and to celebrate the diverse cultures that enrich our school community.

Exams for Semester 1 are over, and I am sure our students in Years 9 to 11 feel relieved to have this period behind them. These exams are crucial in preparing students for their final VCE years. Experience with exam practice consolidates learning, helps students focus, and familiarizes them with exam-style questions, allowing them to identify their strengths and areas for improvement. I commend our students for their hard work and dedication, embodying our values of achievement and perseverance.

This Friday has been Report Writing Day, providing a much-needed “brain break” for our students between their Semester 1 and 2 subjects. While our students enjoy a well-deserved day off, our teachers will be diligently writing reports, reflecting on each student’s progress, and planning for their future success.

Years 7& 12 Fancy Dress took place this week. The Year 12 students have been busy teaching the Year 7s dance routines centred around Taylor Swift’s music and the different eras. This event is a wonderful way for our Year 7s to get to know the Year 12 students, who are excellent role models. I was lucky enough to be a judge and was thoroughly impressed by the imaginative and fun routines. Congratulations to all the forms that participated!

This week, we have special programs running for our Year 9 and Year 10 students, designed to empower them with knowledge and experiences that are crucial for their personal and academic growth:

  • Tuesday: Kingston Youth and Ice Skating
  • Wednesday: Year 9 Careers Day, comprising workshops and lessons related to careers and future planning.
  • Thursday: Year 9 Connection Day, featuring activities focused on themes such as gratitude, student voice and agency, and healthy friendships.
  • Thursday: Year 10 Futures Day, providing information and guidance on work experience, a Senior School Information session, and a financial literacy session.

These programs highlight our commitment to empowering students through practical knowledge and experiences that prepare them for their futures.

Stay warm and rugged up. We are only two weeks from the holidays, a time to rest, recharge, and reflect on all we have achieved together this semester.

Warm regards

Building Fund

As we approach the end of the financial  year, we invite the MGSC community to consider a tax-deductible donation to the MGSC Building Fund.

The Building Fund has been used in the past to support the development of our STEAM Centre and now we are asking our school community to assist us with our next major project The Studio.

The architect's plans are in hand and now ask for your assistance to realise this space.  The Studio will be a purpose-built, self-contained building where our students will be able to undertake activities and programs in relation to dance, aerobics, yoga, meditation and wellbeing.

It will have a panoramic view across the sporting grounds with external decking. The Studio will become a key component of our student wellbeing program and be available for hire for the wider community outside of school hours.

Our Building Fund also supports the continuing improvement of our existing buildings and grounds.  Your contribution will make a difference to every student at MGSC can be made through Trybooking.
