SPARK program
The S.P.A.R.K program for Year 8s ran over two days and included many fun activities. The start of day one consisted of the whole cohort going to the JLC and sitting down into table groups. The instructors Josh and Jarred started explaining what the Spark program is and what we would be doing over the course of the two days. For the first day we spent time looking at world problems and picking one to do research on. We got to fill in different activity sheets and pick 3 solutions to whatever problem you picked. For example; my group chose inflation and we decided to research the price of food. We luckily discovered some really helpful ways to dodge the price and still get good quality, healthy food. After working on those for a few periods we got to do a fun trivia which consisted of general knowledge questions. Unfortunately my group only got 4/10… the questions were hard though so I’ll use that as an excuse!
For the start of the second day we got straight into working on our research task again, we used Google to look up whether or not our idea was already a thing and if we could make any changes to our product. After recess we worked on the branding aspect and the logo for our company, finding more ideas for our pitch as well. We worked on our Canva presentations and started writing a pitch to present in front of a small group. After pitching our idea, the teachers had to go through and choose someone to go into the Grand-Finals. There were a total of 7 teams in the grand-final including mine! We were super nervous as we went up to present but my team felt like we did really well! After the other teams finished presenting we had to battle against the anxious wait of finding out who won! Turns out… my group lost but a very big congratulations to Planet Pizza who won! Overall I had a very fun experience and it was great to have a different experience to normal classes.
